Whew, how can a movie be an 8 and a 4 for me at the same time
What a weird one. I’m giving it a 6 but was prepared to give it a 4 or 5 throughout the first half hour
The good: Main actor was great. That dude was a menace of a person IRL, he shot an extras finger off during this movie cuz he got mad. He’s a mess but it worked really well
The location shooting was obviously great. The camera work was sometimes awesome, I loved the few circling around the raft shots and some others
and I like stories like this. It reminded me of The Odyssey that I had to watch in high school, just a smaller epic. Also Apocalypse Now which very clearly took a big page from this. And The Terror on AMC, Jacob did you think of that throughout this?? I couldn’t stop. Aguirre reminded me of you know who. I really like these journey into madness stories where we learn who the main characters are through like, process of elimination as the others die
The production was pretty insane. If you read about it it makes the movie a lot better tbh. The story blended with reality as the actors were forced to endure the bullshit shooting conditions, I think a lot of the shots were just Herzog shooting the tired cast standing around. That’s pretty neat
The bad: it was slow at times and the first 30 minutes weren’t the best. And I would’ve liked a better ending despite enjoying the final shot. Apart from that I can’t hate on it much, it’s hard to put into words what I didn’t love about it and what’s holding my rating back
I get why critics rave about it and I wish I felt the same way to the degree that they do. This is in Ebert’s like top ten movies of all TIME! A lot of people slurp it up, I guess we might’ve if we saw it back then too
Interesting one. Hard to pin down really. Glad I watched it

Honestly these people were in paradise compared to what the crew of The Terror went through
