We have a thread for Infinite but not the first. I'm about to replay through for the first time in ages and Wikey/KC recently got it so it deserves one
Gonna give the new remastered version a shot even tho I hear it's not the best for everyone
I'll spoiler tag my shit since we have newbies playing soon

I've been meaning to replay it and play #2 for the first time, might as well follow your lead.
What's the difference between the remastered and the other one? |
Just updated visuals. Jacob said it was a bit buggy for him and I read that it didn't run for some people whatsoever, but I just started and it runs perfectly fine and looks really great

I think I'll play a location or two a night. Played the intro and Medical Pavillion. I won't spoil any future knowledge I have of how things turn out in the game, if I do I'll be sure to clearly label it with spoiler tags. Most of my tags should just be up to that point in the game. Don't click this one until you finish the Medical Pavillion

I'm sure it's because it's remastered but this game doesn't appear to have aged a day. It looks so good. The aesthetic of Rapture and level design and the propaganda everywhere is amazing
Audio tapes are my favorite feature. I love when they're found on a body and tell a mini story of how someone ended up there. The saddest one so far was the girl who was wounded in the New Years Eve party massacre and her second audio tape was her all excited that Steinman was gonna fix her, but if you flip over her corpse you'll see that her face is still hideously scared. Really cool that you'd only catch that if you whack at her corpse with your wrench to flip her over
Steinman stuff was fucked, I love the bloody messages everywhere and the audio tape when he starts cutting into the patient's face to the nurse's horror. The fight was easy, I'm playing on medium so I can blast through relatively quickly. Only at one point did I start running pretty low on medkits/eve and money. Big Daddy fight was about as tough as I remember it being. I love whenever a Big Daddy/Little Sister come roaming through, they're so great
Some of the opening shit was spo0o0o0ky, like the lady leaning over the empty baby carriage and the doctor that vanishes while you're watching his shadow. And that dude who pops up directly behind you at one point when you grab a plasmid, fuck that guy
After all these years my favorite part of the game is still Jack deciding to just plunge the odd looking vial of liquid into his vein without a second thought |

might replay this series soon. Still never touched BioShock 2 but I hear it's worth playing for the Minerva's Den DLC alone. And I've still only played this one once
Has the remastered been worth it so far Curt? I've seen some reviews on Steam that mention save files getting corrupted midway through the game which makes me VRY wary |
It’s hard to tell without comparing it to the original on PC but I’d say definitely worth it so far. Looks and runs really great. If I lost my save file I’d be pissed tho

Again, I haven’t seen a single sign of any of this. They said they fixed issues with updates so it’s very possible it was taken care of by now, feels like it was

That’s a shame, it’d be nothing without Ken Levine
Irrational Games shut down but was basically rebranded recently as Ghost Story Games led by Levine. Their first game is being worked on and sounds super promising, I’m excited
Also found out that Irrational/Ghost story is based a town over from me. They made all of Bioshock right down the STREET! I wanna work there with 0 experience

The first game is so much fun.
I don't care much for the second one at all, though. |
Agreed, I barely remember it but I definitely remember being let down at the time. I just read part of an article trying to convince people that it’s actually the best of the series and it made some interesting points. I’m excited to play it again without the hype and massive expectations

Neptune's design is great, I love the nautical theme following the fucked up medical one. It's not quite as dark on the surface but it's a cool level and you get to know a lot of the secondary characters via audio tapes. Sullivan the head of security, McDonagh the contractor, Dr. Tenenbaum, crazy Peach Wilkins, and ofc the start of Fontaine's war with Ryan. Good shit
Saddest audio tape this time goes to Mariska Lutz. First you hear about how Ryan takes away her daughter and she fears she might become a Little Sister. Then the second tape is found on her corpse. It's about how she ran into her daughter who was now a Little Sister and she couldn't recognize her anymore. Her and her husband are found dead in bed next to a bunch of pills and a picture of their daughter, fucked up
Forgot how much of a bitch the Spider Splicers can be. I'm relearning the careful balance between using plasmids and using weapons, its been fun
RIP Peach. He put up a good fight. RIP Atlas' family, they didn't
Smuggler's Hideout was a short one but I'm not gonna get into Arcana tonight. That + whatever's after will be tomorrow |

Headphones and lights off is definitely the way to play
If I could give any tip to new players it'd be to really listen to those audio tapes. Find as many as you can and stop walking for a few seconds to listen to it unfold, it's so worth it. They tell mini stories but also come together to form the full picture of what happened to Rapture before you showed up

Perhaps my only complaint is that the seemingly infinite respawns detract from the tension a bit. Like, when fighting Big Daddy, it was tense as fuck, but after the first few deaths it was just a matter of hammering away at him. Didn't help that no matter how many times I died, the damage I did to enemies remained.
Is that specific to the first level? |
|
|
Yeah that's a p. fair complaint, it's like that throughout the whole series. But to be fair I could see it being ridiculously hard otherwise. It's easy to run out of ammo or ADAM so if you blow through all your ammo on a Big Daddy and he kills you, the dent you put in him is kinda necessary. Otherwise you really will be whacking at them with the wrench all game which would blow. I can see how it takes some of the tension out though |

Fun levels. Again the design is perfect. Putting the medical level, the nautical level, and the botany level back to back to back was a good call, they all feel really different from each other but still fit perfectly in Rapture. I liked the idea behind this one, that Rapture would need something to generate oxygen and pump it through the city so they could all live down there. It fleshes the world out and makes it feel more real
Houdini Splicers had a fun sp00000ky introduction
I found a secret room and it had nothing in it except for a dead cat.
Also the flashes of ghosts was explained for the first time (I think). A side effect of the plasmids, someone else's memory getting passed on to me. Cool stuff
Found a final(?) sad diary from Mariska Lutz about her daughter being freaked out by the trees since she had never seen one before
More good stuff from Tenenbaum and got to meet Langford before she died. Good character. I liked her final moment of defiantly writing the code on the glass so I could get the trees growing again
Farmer's Market was a pretty brief level but had a cool design too. Not much expansion from audio tapes, just more about Tenenbaum but some of it was fucked up, good stuff
Fort Frolic and Hephaestus next |

Best level so far. I love the choice to cut the player off from Atlas and Ryan which is something I didn't actually remember, it's allllllll Sander Cohen and it's for the best. Cohen is so good. The perfect example of a twisted campy over the top Bioshock villain, he's my favorite
Design of the level was top notch. Loved the different shops and the art on the walls. Killing and photographing his four protegees was a fun change of pace
Not much in the way of other characters via audio tapes but that's fine since Cohen is such a strong one
After I finished and he was standing next to me, I actually forgot if you could kill him or not so I took a shot at him (I'm finding myself forgetting a lot, it's been ages). Turns out you can! He put up no fight at all, I nailed him in the head with a crossbow bolt. I actually think I remember something about not killing him but I won't spoil that. Pretty sure I've gone with that option each time I've played
Saving Hephaestus for tomorrow |
