I instantly liked Ezekiel more than just about everyone from the main cast.
Same. This is how I felt when Gabriel was introduced too cause he was at least new/different
That's the biggest issue with the show overall imo. Like...who are my favorite characters? I have some I'd rather not see die over others but I can't really say I have heavy favorites, they're really all way too similar. All characters started off interesting and then sorta just """progressed""" into effective zombie killing machines and there's not much more to them now. What's the different between Rosita and Sasha? (: . It reminds me of the guy who reviewed Phantom Menace, I can't think of many unique adjectives to describe the personalities of the main characters at all
New characters are often quirky and different (Eugene, Gabriel), but really their development just turns into whether or not they learn how to kill zombies and are able to earn Rick's trust. The show seems to think the climax of good character development is that familiar scene when Rick finally nods in approval and gives a newer character a chance and some responsibility, its happened so many times
Only real standout role that they give people is to make them the groups' "moral compass" and I've ranted before about how they only do that when they're about to kill someone. Dale, Hershel, Tyreese, now Glenn. After each one of those deaths the showrunners love to talk about how the group is in disarray now because they've lost their moral compass but really nothing meaningful ever ends up coming from it
