As the trick-or-treaters woke up one by one, they noticed not everyone was accounted for. They divided into small groups and set out to search.





In the wee hours of the morning, he was wide awake - and very restless. He tossed and turned on the uncomfortable bed made up of items scavenged from the lost and found, but it was no use. He couldn't sleep. He decided to stretch his legs and go for a walk. Maybe he'd tire himself out, he reasoned.

He made his way in the dark, having mostly memorized the way, and ended up on the other side of the gym. He was under one of the basketball hoops. He jumped up and hit the rim fairly easily. If only he had a basketball. He sighed to himself.

He ventured a bit farther and ended up in the corner by the drinking fountains. Leaning against the wall, he fished his lighter out of his pocket. Then he leaned down and pulled a partial pack of smokes from his sock. His buddies told him smoking was stupid but he just did it once in a while - and he could stop anytime he wanted. Pulling one out, he put it to his lips and flicked the lighter. It sparked weakly but died out quickly. He tried again, and again but it wasn't happening. The lighter was losing its juice. In a fit of frustration, he threw the lighter. He heard it skid across the floor.

Cursing his impatience, he went after it. He followed the sound and ended up at a door. Expecting it to be closed he pushed against it, but it flew open. His foot kicked the lighter farther into the room.

All the way inside the room now, he tried to get his bearings. It was pitch black. He knelt down and started feeling around on the floor. His hand finally located the lighter. Clutching it in his hand possessively, he felt a bit of comfort. Even if it didn't work, he liked having it. He could really use a working lighter about now, he thought. He tried again. He flicked the lighter a few times and was happy when it lit up on the third try. And stayed lit.

He held the light in his outstretched arm and surveyed his surroundings. He was in the equipment closet. He spotted the basketballs in front of him and smiled. As he moved toward the ball rack he stopped short. The lighter was also illuminating a pair of shoes - and they were attached to a person.

Before he could get to his feet, he felt a kick to his face. He fell onto his back and felt another blow. As he lost consciousness, his last thought was of Michael J Fox... for some reason.

The group finally located their friend and mourned the loss. They all knew what this meant. There WAS definitely a killer (or killers?) among them. It was time to figure this out!
