Things to see?
Places to stay?
Foods to eat?
Things to drink besides Guinness? |
Depends on what you are looking for. We were focused mainly on megaliths, so we drove all over the place doing that. Are you planning on focusing on a small area? Are you going into N Ireland at all? I can tell you all the crazy shit we hit.
We actually found places to stay as we went along- basically didn't have any specific plans other than the very beginning of the trip when we stayed in a manor house B&B near Navan. I do recommend that you prep anywhere you want to stay in Dublin in advance if it is anywhere near a weekend, though. Pretty much the whole country comes to Dublin for the nightlife on the weekend, but because the infrastructure is meh, they all stay in Dublin. It;s the only place we had difficulty rolling into town and finding a place to stay.
Get the full Irish breakfast everyday (up north, the Ulster Fry). Don't ask what's in the black and white pudding, just eat it and enjoy it.
For stouts, you also have Murphys and Beamish. |
Mainly staying on the south/west coasts up to the Cliffs of Moher. Probably won't make it up to the north simply because of time. Since we are traveling with the little one we will probably book where we are staying in advance and will definitely make sure we are covered in Dublin knowing that!
I've read about the black and white puddings. I typically try not to ask what is in things while traveling internationally especially until after I taste it so that I'm not biased one way or another. |
OK, then it looks like Galway is out (had a great time there, though) along with the Aran Isles, since that's a bit north of where you are going. Everyone does the Ring of Kerry but we didn't- too much other stuff t see. Since you are staying south, you have to go to Cashel. The remains on the site are pretty awesome, along with the fact that it was a tower house, a church, an abbey, a cathedral, and then the bishop said "Fuck it, it's too cold up here" and built down at the bottom of the hill. Cork was smoky as hell when we went, but there is a church with Harry Clarke stained glass if you are into his art. Limerick had a decent castle in it that, IIRC, had antlers in all of its decorating- Gaston would be proud.
One reason to not plan too far ahead for places to stay is that you may be driving along and then suddenly there is a castle or abbey ruin to go visit. You'll be more likely to keep driving if you "have to" stay in a specific place. | How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat? |

Galway was awesome, though it ruined our plans for the next day. We had a bottle for wine with dinner, then went for a pint at a pub that the locals weren't interested in having non-locals, so we decided to finish the night with one last pint in another pub. That's when we ran into Michael Hannon. He found us, said "I don't have any relatives in America", then proceded to buy us pints. Next thing we knew, it was after last call. I had a little left in my pint when my wife knocked it out of my hands. Michael said "That's no good" and got the barkeep to gvie us both fresh pints *after* last call.
I still have no idea how we made it back to the hotel.
I'll see if I can track down which one we stayed in. Since we didn't plan where to stay, I'll have to look back through my mementos I grabbed throughout the trip. | How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat? |
