It's a stretch, but it is waaaay closer to Def 1 than watermelon soup.
Granted, I'd say soup isn't a beverage, but all the trendy bone broth people running around drinking it in NYC doesn't help that argument. | How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat? |

Now that one you aren't boiling to get the essence/oil out in the water, so you're safe.
It would likely be more stew anyway. | How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat? |

You soften that shit up with the water and then cool it down with milk or cream, making it delicious.

with all do respect, some of you guys have a third-grader's understanding of how language works. dictionaries aren't codebooks and definitions aren't analytic, so getting all transitive like this is several kinds of stupid. unless, of course, you're actually somehow having fun with this shit.
and i think i see now why some people misunderstood me so badly during the driveway discussion. i was only curious about regional differences in usage, but that didn't stop certain people from assuming that i was picking a side.
natural languages like english will defy all attempts at regulation. you can have certain standards (GenAm, SAE, etc) and say that a given usage/spelling is nonstandard, but you cannot say it is incorrect. different dictionaries have different standards, but most follow actual usage and so as english evolves so too do our lexicographies -- something publishers actually like, so they can sell more dictionaries.
even when it comes to terminology (i.e. a fixed word), that fixing is often a matter of raging debate within its discipline. for an easy example, consider almost any legal term, where at times it seems the entire profession is arguing for one's particular opinion about a definition that was supposedly fixed. but they're getting paid. they're not screeching about soup on the internet. so stop it.
p.s. cucumbers and eggplants are berries. strawberries and blackberries are not. your fruit salad is invalid. |
