When you're talking about a hypothetical person who doesn't have a specific gender, how do you refer to them?

The best english example I can think of is "them", but it sounds a bit weird to say.

you wait a generation until everyone has had time enough to play around with the language and a set of truly neutral singular pronouns evolves.

The only annoying part of they/them for a single person is switching from "[NAME] is" to "they are" since "[NAME] are" doesn't work well. Otherwise it being grammatically plural isn't really confusing at all.
