This is actually quite more complicated. For one, most of the "gotcha" stories on this are referring to chargemaster rates, which are the 100% charge for all procedures, etc. Nobody is supposed to pay the chargemaster rate; it's the rate at which all insurance and other discounts are applied. Often the chargemaster is a set percentages above the "cost" of the particular procedure or item, with incidental costs included. For example, people bitch about the "cost" of an IV drop bag, not noting that built into the cost is the bag and water itself, the salary of the nurse who administers it, the cost of storing the supplies, etc. etc. Yes, you can buy some ibuprofen yourself and take it for much cheaper- but if you were to hire someone to come and give it to you personally in your home, you'd find the cost per tablet would get a lot more expensive. ;)
