Boyhood

Amazing. It was pretty close to perfection. One of the most true to life movies I've ever seen, there was hardly anything that ever seemed unnatural. It was almost more of an EXPERIENCE than a movie really

Yes. Would've liked a bit more tangible story structure (whatever the fuck that is), but understand why it may not have been possible. I thought Before Midnight straddled that line between Linklater aimlessness and having an otherwise traditional plot really well...

Not sure what that would look like, though. There was definitely character evolution... and change... but it seemed too arbitrary or unmotivated by a larger vision. Completely realize that was the point... Just disagree with the approach a bit. Not that everything needs to be The Godfather or Breaking Bad (or LOST)... But, here, the only real consistent thread was time. Life's too much like that, obviously, for me to accept it as the driving force of a movie. Need something more, some authorial intent. It was there in individual scenes, but not as a whole. I guess it's hard to commit to something if you have twelve years to second guess it.

Pretentious fuckface review over.

I find those sorts of aimless films to be hard to really enjoy. Might be worth a one time watch, but I personally KNOW what life is like and I live life everyday. I don't see the joy in watching a film, nodding my head, and saying "Yes, this accurately depicted the life of an average joe like me... hmm yes" while sipping tea.

I prefer more structure.

When it comes to a movie being an experience, Gravity was that for me. Not an experience I can have myself by just living.

Well, I DO agree that it's probably "only" worth a one time watch. Just because the first-time experience of watching Mason's life unfold is pretty extraordinary. I don't think it'd have nearly the same impact on subsequent viewings

Gravity on mute is unbelievable, an incredible CINEMATIC ACCOMPLISHMENT.

With the sound on, though, it's kind of unbearable.

Man I remember when I first discovered IMDB and Boyhood (or Untitled Richard Linklater Project, whatever) was one of the first movies I stumbled upon on there. Checked on the status of it every time I remembered it wondering if it was still in production since I found the concept of it so fascinating. I always wondered what would have happened if someone on the main cast died or something. I never had much interest in actually watching it despite being on my mind since I was 11 or so but I may still give it a look once it's available to me anyway.

Been on a movie binge since I have no vehicle at the moment and have a three day weekend:

Bernie. Wasn't expecting to like it at all but Netflix kept suggesting it. I actually really enjoyed it. Jack Black was pretty fantastic in it.

A Dark Truth. I think I mentioned this in the thread, I don't remember. Watched it cause I felt like watching a Kim Coates movie. It was pretty shitty. Forrest Whitaker was really good in his scattered parts throughout though.

Pain and Gain. Again, always suggested to me but the reviews always turned me off and Michael Bay blows. Not as bad as I thought it would be though. The Dwayne was particularly good in it and was pleasantly surprised to see Ed Harris in it, who is one of my favorites. But shit, pretty fucking morbid that this was a comedy considering that stuff really happened and those mofo's are really on death row. Bet that pissed a lot of families off.

Rewatched Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2 for the hell of it. While I was on an Eddie Murphy kick, I watched 48 HRs and it's sequel which I never saw, both were pretty fun stuff.

Got roped into watching a movie called where I belong. It was about a foster child who adopts a bunny. It was about what you'd expect

Bernie and Pain and Gain are two movies I keep meaning to watch.

I saw Bernie at the top of Best of Netflix just last night and it piqued my interest in it again.

In The Mouth of Madness

Do you read Sutter Cane? Weird as fuck, but it was entertaining. I rate it three John Carpenters out of a total five John Carpenters.

The World's End

Didn't particularly love it, but also didn't dislike it. Definitely my least favorite out of the 'trilogy', but it wasn't bad. I just didn't get into it as much as I did Shaun of the Dead and especially Hot Fuzz. It might warrant a re-watch and reevaluation when it's not 5-7 AM, but I doubt my opinion would shift too strongly.

Wasn't a big fan of Pain and Gain. It was ok but glad I didn't pay to see it.

Watched Sharknado 2 finally. Man I love that series. So great.

Bad shark movies have lost their luster for me back with Sharktopus. I'd rather watch an unintentionally bad movie than a purposefully bad one.

I was thinking about that as I was watching Sharknado 2. If they keep it going, they'll have to keep trying to make them bad, and they might get really bad in a bad way. What did I even just say?

Snowpiercer

Well-executed, different, although it could've been a lot more. I do feel like I get it, but I do not know how I felt about the ending.
