Look away Zersch, look away!
It was uh...not my favorite! I will say that after sitting on it I appreciated it a little bit more. But a lot, but a lil. I watched the Dead Meat killcount on it after it ended too and that made me like it more, I learned some stuff about it
Bill Mosely is the mvp I think. I liked him a lot in the Firefly trilogy and in contrast he seems like a v nice lovely man IRL. Chop Top is such a fucking kook of a character
I didn't looove the huge shift in tone from TCM to this. It reminds me of Evil Dead to ED2 but...less successful! I just think it was such a weird choice when they could've done more with their winning formula from the first. Certainly a BRAVE choice! Ill give them that. But definitely a weird one. The first was so horror 70s and this one was 80s to an extreme. I wonder if the third exudes the 90s
Really did not like that Hopper, Drayton, grandpa, and LEATHERFACE all died in an off screen explosion, that was a lame way for the four of them to go out. Hopper was a fun goofy character but could've been used even more I think
Another mvp would be LG who just absolutely refused to die
Hate to say it Zersch, but I am not a fan of the cartoonish hip wiggle dance that they decided to give Leatherface :(
I had no idea that corpse was supposed to be the hitchhiker from the first movie until I watched Dead Meat. That made me enjoy the absurdity of it all more, the fact that they were just dragging him around with them. Especially since that's Chop Tops brother I guess
Also, my god does Rob Zombie owe everything he has to this movie
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Gore & Disturbing - Cannibal
Ravenous vs. Neon Demon vs. Texas Chainsaw 2. Man oh man, none are all that great. Ravenous would be my favorite of these three so 2018 gets the two points. I had a lot of issues with Neon Demon but it certainly looked great. The visuals in that are better than anything in TCM2 for me. Neon gets the point

I caught your post immediately and stared right into the sun with no warning... I didn't expect you to like it, I don't think many people do really. And I'm sure nostalgia is 80% of the reason I like it. But that whole stretch in the radio station is one of my favorites, with that jump scare and lunatic Chop Top digging at his scalp.
And Hopper's constant ridiculousness.

I love the idea of Leatherface having a crush on someone and not wanting to kill them but taking it all the way to making the chainsaw into an analog for his dick and him humping around was always a little too much for me.

Score by JOHN WILLIAMS! How about that. The GOAT
I enjoyed this. Does what Jacob's Ladder and Berberian Sound Studio couldn't do for me. I watched most of it alone late at night and boiiii was I paranoid at every little sound
The sound design and editing make this movie for sure. The ASMR! Those creepy whispers really got me. I thought the look of the movie and whole style was great from the get go
Don't really have much to say tbh, it was effective at what it was trying to do. The stab kill while the guy was taking his shirt off looked great, that was a brutal bit
★★★½ very good/well executed
Psychological - Phobia & Isolation
Hidden vs. Session 9 vs. Images. Easy one! Session 9 is the only one of these I didn't like, it gets NADA! Hidden was a fun time but Images was superior for me. Two points for Images pushes this year ahead

Oh the jumpscare was honestly an all timer, I completely forgot to mention that (watched it a week ago). I loved that bit, jump scares dont usually get me and I remember thinking that the way the shot was framed that LGs body was obviously about to be there, but I did NOT expect Leatherface and a roaring chainsaw. That got me for sure

Two new movies join my top ten, Snow Hollow and Images. I am veryyyy thankful that they bumped out Living Dead and original Thing. My top ten is way easier to swallow now. Up until a few hours ago I actually had Snow Hollow as my top spot just a hair over Horror Noire, but I ended up bumping Noire up to a four and let the recency bias on Snow Hollow die down a tad
Thankfully nothing from this batch joins the terrible 4s and under at the bottom |

That was messy...but in a good way? It’s a genuine portrayal of a psychopath, good and bad. The movie does a great job of setting up the “profile” of this guy who is clearly unstable and unthreatening. The rest of the movie is us in the driver seat with him, seeing how sinister and pathetic he really is. The murders are clumsy, awkward, and really hard to watch. He has this perfect image of what his murder is suppose to look like, but in the end it’s just pathetic and sad to watch him kill these innocent and helpless people. The camera work is super disorientating, but it compliments the tone of the movie really well.
I’m not really sure how to feel about it. This stuff isn’t really my THING but it’s hard to deny that it accomplished what it set out to do.
SCORE - 7/10
Psychological - Home Invasion. The Strangers v Funny Games v Angst.
As horrible as Funny Games is to watch, I’ve grown to respect it more and more for what it does and its style. Funny Games gets 2 points. Angst gets 1 point. Strangers gets 0 points.

A really solid horror doc. Really enjoyed the pairing of Keith David and Ken Foree. I thought it had a lot of great observations on race in horror, but I guess the structure felt a little flat for me? It sort of felt like a simple walkthrough African American cinema history. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it made the overall watch a little less dynamic than other really great docs. Surprised there was no talk of Wesley Snipes and BLADE!
SCORE - 7/10

I originally gave this a 6 but bumped it up to 7 after some thought. I really enjoyed it, especially the performances, but the runtime just felt a little dragged. A lot of the “can she do something before Jane gets home” scenes felt repetitive. Loved the ending on the beach though. “We could have been friends this whole time” is a great line.
SCORE - 7/10
Misc. - Revenge. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance v Irreversible v What Ever Happend to Baby Jane?
This is a TOUGH category. Irreversible is really difficult to judge, not just because it’s Gaspar Noe but because it’s hard to say you enjoyed a movie with a uncomfortably long scene of sexual assault. It’s the style of the camera work, commitment of the performances, and the creative story structure that make it so impressive. Irreversible gets 2 points. Lady V gets 1 point. Baby Jane gets 0.
