why wouldn't he tho, assuming the Lakers can still afford him and LeBron? tbh the NBA cap seems like a myth, I have no idea how it works considering it does nothing to deter super teams

long story short they have his bird rights and can offer him a max contract with a higher per year increases and 1 more year then any other team.
super teams actually are harder to create and maintain now. it either takes players to give up way more money to sign with a different team then staying with there original team, and were talking $30 plus million just on the same 4 years and missing out on a 5th year that would be worth potentially $15 million more then the max they could get if someone else is even willing to pay them that much 4 years later.
alternatively you can make a super team by drafting really well but even then after a players 7th year they are potentially eligible for a supermax contract. and there is a stupid high repeater tax* for teams that were tax teams in 3 of the past 4 seasons.

the Heat did it by Wade and Bosh taking less money well also only having Mario Chalmers on there roster at the time(there are cap holds for empty roster spots until you have maybe 11 players but there for the league minimum). the Warriors were only able to keep everyone and add Durant due to a perfect storm of things.
first they got Curry signed long term on a team friendly deal by singing him to an extension early when his ankles were constantly making him miss extended time. then Klay was on a max contract but the max for players with i think its 5 years of service or less is fairly low(there is a better fix then the Rose rule for that now) and he singed that maybe the year before the cap exploded. then Green was a restricted free agent the year the cap spiked, but at the time only his cap hold, which was based on his old contract as a 2nd round pick counted against there cap. combine all those low numbers with a major cap spike because the players and the league could not agree on a proposal to smooth the cap over a few years and they ended up with enough cap space to sing a max free agent.
there was a major (i think it may have been $20 mil or something) spike in the cap from a new CBA + national TV deal and a since changed quirk in how restricted free agency worked. |
essentially all of that has been fixed now. cap holds now much better reflect the amount a player can sign for. on top of that they added special designated player contracts that allow a team to re-sign up to players coming off rookie deals to contracts up to 5 years instead of 4. and to re-sign players coming off there second(or later) contract for more money then other teams can offer and an additional year if said player has hit specific league wide award stuff.
for example John Wall was the first player to sign the new supermax extension resulting in him having a contract that payed stupid money starting this past season.
2019/20 $38,199,000
2020/21 $41,254,920
2021/22 $44,310,840
2022/23** $47,366,760
**player option
*how stupid high? in millions:
2017-18 Cavs ($50.7), Warriors ($32.3), Thunder ($25.4), Wizards ($7.0)
2018-19 Thunder ($61.6), Warriors ($51.5), Raptors ($25.2), Blazers ($15.0), Celtics ($3.4)
19-20 tax numbers are not final yet. point is almost no team can afford to be in the tax for 4/5 years and many cant afford even 3/4. the 3/4 is why for example my Celtics got under the tax this year so they can be in the tax for several future seasons. even the Warriors with Ballmer's crazy money made moves to get under the tax this year.
