Started off with a bang and now sliding off a cliff with Jacob’s Ladder!

I like being annoyingly independent and hate large scales, so here’s how I’m scoring:
1 - Don’t open the goddamn door
2 - Congratulations, you found an axe
3 - Making a pyramid of zombie heads
4 - Destroying the world with a flamethrower
|
|
Category: Psychological - Madness and Paranoia
Score: 1.5 - You opened the door with an axe. Or something.
This was.... really disappointing. It didn’t help that it had been on my list of movies I wanted to watch for a long time after finding it on a variety of mindfuck movie lists (with tbh maybe aren’t the best lists to be looking at but whatever), but even without the hype it wasn’t great. I can understand that it might have been one of the first of its kind, and therefore more shocking, but to me it felt shockingly telegraphed (the palm reading lady legit spoils the ending like a third of the way in, not to mention other blatant references) with pretty bad script and acting. I don’t know. This is usually my favorite genre, because I love nothing more than a cleverly crafted twist ending, but this left me flat. I must’ve checked how much time was left thirty times.
Slight props for holding together a non-linear storyline decently - I was never more confused than I was supposed to be about what was happening - but props taken back away for how cheesy the scene with the kid at the end was. I don’t even know what else to say other than it reminded me of my reaction to Donnie Darko in the worst way lol. Hopefully it’s up from here.

Since everyone trashed The Devil’s Backbone last year, I’m switching my Paranormal - Ghosts and Spirits to Phantasm cuz a friend recommended it and I’m gonna watch it anyway. A little bit of a stretch but whatever.

Definitely a quality movie, but somehow felt more like I was trying to like it than being genuinely engaging. I really liked the feel: had that slow, thoughtful, European quality to it and took its time more than most horror movies. The scare factor came less from individual disturbing moments, and more from being invested in characters who aren’t meant to be together, or aren’t meant to exist in society as they are. The color palate was consistently muted and blue, adding to the desolate mood of the story.
I do wish it was slightly higher on scare factor; there were a few decent jump scares and not much in the way of imagery. The shots lingered on more mundane details, which was cool for drawing me into the word and normalizing it while still commenting on its absurdity, but it also kinda lulled me into being slightly asleep. I know a lot of people love this one and I can objectively say it was well-made, but doesn’t crack the list of my favorites.

Wow. That was the most disturbing thing I’ve ever watched and I couldn’t fucking look away from it. It’s incredible how much this movie strives to make you uncomfortable. While it’s known for its two highly controversial scenes, what it does best are the pieces around them. It sets the scene with the credits, rolling backwards and slightly off, getting worse as they progress. The first twenty minutes also spend a lot of time with the camera unfocused and spinning, with music apparently designed to make you nauseous. At this point, you don’t know what you’re nervous for, but you know it’s coming.
The latter part of the movie focuses on the “happy” scenes, tainted by knowledge of what’s about to happen and ending with an absolute gut punch. Not only is it uncomfortable pretending to be happy, but the movie also drops casual references to what’s about to happen that are gut-wrenching. It left me speechless. I spent a good few minutes in a stupor, trying to process, after it ended and know it’ll be on my mind for days. It’s a movie I’ll only watch once because of its brutality and would hesitate to recommend, but really questions predetermination and reminds us to savor the moment because the future is unknown.

I have to avoid looking at your review, but I'm very excited to watch it. I've recently started watching Gaspar Noe's movies and so far I think he's absolutely amazing.
Climax is still my favorite movie of the year atm and Enter the Void is one of the most unique movies I've ever seen.

I can’t wait for you to watch it! And curious to hear what you think. I hadn’t seen much if any French extremity before, so I’ll definitely check those out.

What a fantastic movie! Was it the most creative or thought-provoking thing I’ve ever seen? No. But it had everything I was looking for and DELIVERED on entertainment value, even 35 years later. Loved the amount of 80s kitsch - I was already excited when the credits came on and the title screen looked like a PowerPoint graphic - and it didn’t try to do more than it had the effects for. The jump scares were solid and it did a great job creating tension, especially towards the end. Plus young Johnny Depp in a crop top.
The idea of a killer who haunts dreams but can still kill in real life is awesome and I loved that the adults realistically didn’t believe them because it seems like a ridiculous idea. I love when movies can blur the fantasy/reality line instead of being all fantasy. Nancy is a baller of a character and was doing strong female protagonist before it was cool, rivaling Home Alone for homemade booby-traps. I’m also a sucker for nursery rhymes used in horror movies because somehow they’re always so damn creepy (The Orphanage is another one that does this well).
Just... I’m on such a high from watching this. Definitely wanna see again, easily one of my favorites. Slasher isn’t usually my favorite so I didn’t come in with high expectations and am SO GLAD I watched this!
