Here's a similar argument I get that's a cop out:
"We can't do anything to stop school shootings because these people are crazy and will get guns and shoot people."
|
I was about to respond to Primate's post but this boils it down better. This is the excuse for not banning assault weapons, requiring extensive background checks, etc. People want their guns at the expense of lives and they don't care. Politicians don't want to lose their NRA blood money. Other countries have shown us what works but it comes down to selfishness in this country.

If I had any answers, I'd be running for office somewhere. I'd suggest that we start with term limits for Congress, and see what happens when people aren't more worried about re-election than what's possibly more important. But, perhaps my opinion on that is easily refutable. Baby steps, though, I guess. |
One party *does* have this as part of their platform. And it is one I agree on. Hell, I'm moving towards us losing the winner-takes-all stuff that's built into our system (and powers the two-party system in the first place) as well as killing the limit on HR reps which has caused the Reps per population to get large (leading to a lot less accountability).

Those are some possible "solutions" that can be taken from the cop-out answer. Or, if mental health is the issue, then we need comprehensive health care, including mental health.
I'm just really sick of no suggestions and throwing up hands being the reaction to everything. It's pretty ingrained in Gen Xers mainly because Baby Boomers fucked things up so much that we're like "Fuck it- whatever." | How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat? |

Ever since Trump was elected I never realized how stupid my friends on Facebook were. And they get dumber with each shooting or event. |

Luckily my family isn't to open politically except my mom's wife. But she's not over the top and willing to have open discussions. |

I think we need to extend the length of Congressional terms for House reps. Two years is not long enough--it essentially means they're campaigning the entire time they're in office. I think even extended the two-year term to three years would help things a bit, because at least there's some downtime in the middle when they're not worried about their next election. | "All this from a slice of gabagool?" |

The main problem is the money...To make things better on any level in my opinion, we have to remove the private & corporate money that is buying and establishing the party lines on any and all issues.
It should be the policy arguments from the people and their representatives that decide a party line on any issue, not the money that the NRA or UAW gives to back what's best for them.
When the money is stopped you may see improvement, until then I'll never delve into or participate in political arguments cause they are pointless and a waste of time. | |

The United States is an individualistic society and that will never change. You can't be a liberal and fight for rights/freedoms in one department and completely ignore them in the other. It also is hilarious that liberals literally don't know shit about guns so them trying to come up with effective legislation is laughable. Agreed with fuck the NRA though.

I'm going to guess I know a whole lot more about guns than you. Not everyone on this issue thinks AR-15 stands for "Assault Rifle-15".
I do find it hilarious that assault rifles have been rebranded as MSRs as a bit of propaganda.
