If successful, he hopes to build upon the plan and build a Los Angeles to San Francisco loop and a Texas loop.

If he plans to build fully underground, we'll all be dead before they are done boring all those miles of tunnels. It takes decades to bore a single tunnel for a subway extension of just a couple of miles, there is no way to bore a single tunnel from DC to NYC quickly.

I'd love if the US had a European-style railroad system here in the US, and not just the single Amtrak system that, outside of the coasts, doesn't really go anywhere fast enough to make sense.

Also how did he manage to get "verbal approval" from all federal, state, and city governments involved in this project? I find this hard to believe. I saw his tweet this morning and was like "sounds like sci-fi."

Not sure why SF -> LA isn't his priority.

We need a national rails system like the UK that makes rail travel more affordable, but that's probably too socialist to happen here.

Elon Musk is going to reveal his revolutionary "boring" machine, guaranteeing it will take only 2-years to do all the tunnels.
