That isn't even the stupidest thing he's said this year, either. A few months back he said, imagine if a Fox News producer said "they are pushing a bogus story about the president's birth certificate just for ratings, and the CEO is on board with it. That would be national news."

I'm less liberal than most of you claim to be and never watch fox news, let alone commit their silliness to memory.
"News" is a business that sells advertising. They do so by pooping out confirmation bias for those who agree and playing the heel to those who disagree with their strategically chosen "views". There are some nuggets of fact in there, to be sure, but the bulk seems to be spin and sales.
Fox isn't alone, they didn't invent this stuff, and probably aren't even the best at it.

Well yeah, Primate. You're right. And that opinion is all well and good but a significant portion of America get their news solely from Fox News, so that in and of itself is a reason we actually have to give thought to what they say so their irresponsible bullshit continues to be challenged. It exists whether we want it to or not and as long as American news media continues to profit based on ratings, the more people's insular views will continue to be reaffirmed and left unchallenged. Fox, CNN, MSNBC. They're all ruining civil discourse in this country. | "All this from a slice of gabagool?" |

Unless you at least boycott the sponsors and let them know why, "calling the news stations out" actually encourages them to continue.
Just my opinion, though.

ignoring the business of journalism for a moment, do you consider journalism itself to be a social science? do you think it's possible to have ethical and professional journalism? and if that could be put into practice, how would those journalists be compensated?
for an analogy, consider the difference between medical knowledge and medical practice. many people give up on science because of the corrosive nature of big pharma, but that's a step backwards. or for an even closer analogy, consider history (as a discipline). |

I do not consider journalism to be a social science, although it does employ social sciences. I think Ethical journalism is possible, but even then everything is tempered by personal experience. The bards and historians of old often literally" had a dog, or a cousin, in the fight". I don't think you need to give up on journalism or history. I think you need to mistrust what you read and guard against swallowing your own bias, and using it to villify, or elevate the actions of others.
Journalism as a profession, at least in our economy, has at least some level of built in control in that it relies on sponsorship to drive revenues.
Unfortunately, people are less likely to employ those controls if they are swept up by the emotion that this type of news often tries to provoke. Or so it seems to me.

Yeah. I do get my weather from the old farmers at the gas station, so I'm pretty up to date on that.
