Dear Student:
I am sending this email to an identified group of NOVA students to inform you of a situation that involves some of your personal information. Only students who are directly receiving this email were affected.
On Wed., March 22, 2017, NOVA learned that a staff member had sent an email the previous evening to all students on the Manassas Campus student distribution list. That email inadvertently included an attachment that contained the student ID, name, address, phone, VCCS email, age, race, gender, veteran’s status, full- or part-time student status, credits earned, program of study and grade point average of the students listed. Your information was included in that attachment.
When NOVA was alerted to the disclosure, the college immediately acted to recall the email, effectively deleting any unread copies. Since we learned of this event, the college has been acting on multiple fronts to prepare to notify the affected students. We have been working to assemble resources that include a web page and phone number to call if you have questions. We did not want to alert you until those resources were in place.
It is important to note this disclosure DID NOT include social security numbers, birthdates, bank account numbers or other sensitive financial data. While no financial information was disclosed, free credit monitoring will be available.
We have NO reason to believe your personal data has been misused in any way. However, because your information was released to other students, and in an abundance of caution, I did want to inform you.
I want you to know that NOVA places the utmost importance on information security and on personal privacy, and we take this situation extremely seriously.

If you have any other questions, you may call 703-323-XXXX. Any calls that go to NOVA’s Help Desk, Call Center or other college numbers will be redirected to this number.
Please accept my sincere apologies for this unfortunate occurrence. I am deeply sorry to have to send this note to our students who have entrusted us with their personal information. NOVA is committed to protecting your privacy, and we are constantly working to strengthen our policies in this regard. We will send updates as the need arises to keep you informed.
