Could it be a pokemon? Like detective pikachu? I’m trying to think of characters that were later made into a movie. Though technically pikachu was in movies in the 90s.

Transformers also popped into my head but they aren’t living breathing things.

The not originally in a movie/tv show but eventually for a movie is the big ticket clue. They had to debuted in either a video game or a book and there are not a ton of book to animated movie options I don’t think. Or even video games really. I did some research and it’s like Racket and Clank and Angry Birds.
