This guy said it better than my brief synopsis.
Stolen from another forum:
Surgical transition from male to female requires as many as 18 surgical procedures, with associated anesthesia, OR and hospital costs. Then there are the missed duty days, followed by days on physical profile with limited duty. During all of this period, the service member would be in a non-deployable status...so some other service member has to pick up the load.
If a service member returned from Afghanistan with severe wounds, requiring 18 surgeries, and 2 or more years of limited duty, they would be medically boarded out of the service.
For that reason, I would agree that a person with significant medical requirements should be banned from service in the military.
I do not feel that an individual who has completed their transition should be banned. As they would, no longer, have extensive medical liability.
If we are going to prevent people with chronic medical conditions from being accessed into the military, transgendered persons, IMHO, meet that criteria.
As for costs, active duty personnel have to pay for the costs of elective surgical procedures...however, that does not cover the lost time cost for post surgical periods.

The argument that I have heard is it is basically a costly, preexisting medical condition. People with other conditions that would cost similar amounts of money and medical leave/off time are not allowed into the military, and are even medically discharged when they arise.
On that basis, I see their point.

Yeah, though I would say that an outright ban is silly. How about something like:
1) VA med won't cover costs,
2) If surgery/recovery happens during military time and thus you are unable to perform your duties, you get discharged, just like other medical issues. |
Yeah. That would be a good way to go about it.

The fact that many still believe it's a mental disorder is just baffling.

It did take the APA 25 years to declassify it after it was proven wrong, but even that hold out ended in the early 70's.
