A little switcheroo because The Garden of Sinners was actually an entire series! OOPS!
|
I think this may be my first 10 movie? I was honestly really surprised and EXCITED the whole time I was watching this one. They introduced a ton of fun concepts for monsters in this movie and going in with the expectation of just a simple vampire hunter movie probably helped that. I thought this movie's premise was extremely fun and had a great balance between action and good character development. And they were never short on shock value.
And the animation of this movie was absolutely phenomenal. It felt like every frame had SO much detail in it, I'd be interested in seeing how long this movie actually took to create. Because it was breath-taking at parts. I'm still kind of astounded by it. The gothic style and drama that the animation brought to the table was BRILLIANT.
I just had a really good time watching this movie and I'd probably watch it again if I could. I teetered between a 9 and a 10 but I realized that if I had to look to see if there was a sequel almost immediately after it was over, it deserved its 10. THE ANIME CATEGORY BRINGS IT YET AGAIN! |

I've not watched the original or Bloodlust since I was a kid but I remember enjoying it a bit. Might have to rewatch it with that praise freshly attached to it. I feel a bit of a failure because I looked at your anime category, saw what you had picked and thought "gotta be something much better" but then Vampire Hunter D didn't even enter my mind.

The artist for Vampire Hunter D also did the character art for the earlier Final Fantasy games and still does the logos at least for them now. Yoshitaka Amano. That was actually the main reason I was interested in it as a kid. Turned out to be pretty damn good all on its own merits though.

Finally getting started with The Exorcism of Emily Rose!
(Apologies that these aren’t going to be pretty until at least August because I’m stuck doing all of them from my phone. Enjoy.
|
I like being annoyingly independent and hate large scales, so here’s how I’m scoring:
1 - Don’t open the goddamn door
2 - Congratulations, you found an axe
3 - Making a pyramid of zombie heads
4 - Destroying the world with a flamethrower
|
|
Category: Paranormal - Possession
Score: 3 - Making a pyramid of zombie heads
This definitely wasn’t what I expected going in, but I ended up really enjoying it! The horror level was pretty low - either that or I never find possession movies scary - and focused more around the courtroom drama and question of science and medicine versus faith. Emily’s story was told through flashbacks as they became relevant in the court case, but still happened pretty chronologically, which made it easy to follow. The acting and filming of possession was really well done: it felt inhuman and terrifying, while still being realistic enough to haunt you. Laura Linney also came in clutch, even though this whole movie made me think of her playing a prosecutor in Primal Fear (which is an AMAZING movie that everyone should watch if they haven’t).
Generally the horror was disturbing images and a few jump scares, not gory at all. It did bring up how scary the unknown can be, and how much uncertainty we can open ourselves up to when we consider not just the likely, but also the possible. A cool idea, since I think the scariest ideas are the ones that feel on the boundary of what we know, just plausible enough to get stuck in our subconscious even if our waking mind says otherwise.

Here’s some lingo I never use - this movie lowkey slaps. SLAPS!
Been awhile since I’ve seen a movie from its time period that still held up and worked on pretty much all levels. I think Predator HAD to have drawn inspiration from this. Besides the obvious connections plot wise, I noticed quite a few extremely similar shots between the two. Even goofy Anaconda seemed to be inspired by this. Its influences on future monster movies are p clear so that’s cool
Characters were all good, I liked the lead and the boat captain was holding it down the whole movie. Enjoyed the struggle between the lead and the douchey character
The creature itself was goofy with his big goopy mouth but I still liked it a lot. The way it swam was perfect, it was definitely much better underwater than on land. One complaint is I wish they took the Jaws approach and didn’t show the creature for awhile longer but that’s aight
Another complaint - the music. Man do I wish they came up with at least one other creature theme instead of just blaring those same loud horns in my ear every time his webbed hand poked into frame
All in all I enjoyed it more than I expected to given its age. Fun stuff, and it was all shot and produced surprisingly well. The underwater sequences looked good
★★★½ very good/well executed

I'm just coping this review from the Midsommar thread:
Decided to go alone tonight on a whim. Why is it even out tonight? WHO KNOWS! I've only gone to the movies alone twice before and each time they made that movie a lil special, this was no exception
This was a trip. It wasn't scary, but it wasn't quite the modern typical under the skin unnerving either? It was SOMETHING ELSE. It really felt like a different type of horror that's hard to pin down. It was definitely horrifying and overwhelming and uncomfortable, that's for sure. Ari Aster's an enigma so far but I really like him, I hope he keeps doing horror
I still hadn't seen any trailers or footage at all before watching this. I'm so glad. I watched the trailers when I got out and they do a great job of showing things out of context but boy was some of it still really spoilery. Either way, it was so fun going in like Hereditary and only having an idea of what the horror element was gonna be. I def had a better idea for this than I did with Hereditary because it kinda goes where you think it'll go genre wise but that's okay
Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor were both great. She was reallyyyy good. That ending with her was...woof. Interesting. Christian was a dick and a terrible boyfriend but man did I feel sorry for him by the end. Definitely an annoying dude but whew, that was quite the breakup. I was really hoping she wouldn't choose him at the end. Speaking of which, the director tweeted this which cracks me up now:
“I wrote #Midsommar while I was going through a breakup, 4 years ago. Now it’s a movie. This is, down to the last detail, exactly what happened.”
Way funnier than I expected too. Will Poulter's character was played perfectly between annoying and hilarious, his lines all really landed. The relationships falling apart between everyone was all really well done. They all had some flaws for sure but I didn't wanna see any of them go. At the same time...I wish we did see them go a lil bit more. One shockingly brutal death in the middle there would've been nice, like Josh's should've been more for sure. The skin mask during that scene was a horrifying image though
Also, the first ten minutes before the title cards came up were so perfect. That reveal with the parents. God damn
8/10 for me. Better than Hereditary maybe? They're SO close. Hereditary was stuck in my head for many days after watching it and only got better in my mind. This'll be hard to shake too. It's a toss up for what worked for me more but I think I'm leaning this
★★★★ great/affecting/memorable

Eh. I thought it was pretty inoffensive but also pretty uninspired. I don't have much to say at all
Cool setting, creepy enough looking monsters, well lit and well shot, good cast. Just didn't come together into anything special at all. Some shots of the ghosts appearing in the fog were really creepy, I wish there was more of that. I read that Carpenter knew he had a stinker on his hands during the first cut so he went back and added more gore...where was it? The kills were pretty lame and could've been way better, especially since the ghosts' weapons were neat and could've been brutal
Not much else to say really, just lots of missed opportunities. I liked that Tom Atkins' name was Nick Castle aka the guy who played OG Myers, that was fun
I'm with Jacob, Carpenter's movies are so hit or miss. More hit than miss tbh, he's really only directed two movies that I like of the nine I've seen. Though one of them is the greatest horror movie OF ALL TIME(!!!!) so good for him. I just wish his absolutely perfect Thing suspense worked out better in movies like this and Prince of Darkness etc. A shame
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Monster - Animals & Nature: Last year it was Cujo, which is another 5/10 for me. We've got a SHOWDOWWWWWWWWN. I'm gonna go with.............The Fog I think? Neither of these were all that great. Both felt like short horror stories stretched thin into barely 90 minute movies. Cujo felt like made for tv low quality garbage for much of it and only had a couple of good brutal moments. Fog had some fairly well done creepy ghosts going for it and good cinematography at least so it gets the edge. TIED UP! What a comeback

My second batch of five means a new updated rank:
|
1. Midsommar
2. Day of the Dead
3. Creature From the Black Lagoon
4. The Haunting
5. Dracula
6. The Perfection
7. As Above, So Below
8. The Fog
9. The Hills Have Eyes
10. Critters
We got a LEAD CHANGE PEOPLE! The Haunting gets rightfully tossed out of my #1 spot. First Day of the Dead was there, but Midsommar def takes the top spot. That could be a hard one to dethrone tbh
This was a good batch compared to the first five. Three of these new ones are now my top three. And nothing managed to replace Critters as the worst movie so far so that's nice |

Man. This is a TOUGH movie to judge
I was very hyped for this. The reviews on LB are so good and everyone said it was hilarious and zany and great. Overall I'm disappointed for sure but I still liked...most of it. There are three clear acts of the movie
ACT ONE: The 40 minute single take was fun. I enjoyed trying to figure out if it really was a movie within a movie for much of it. I'm a sucker for long takes in movies whether it's straight dialogue with no camera movement or lots of choreography and coordination, it's always fun and impressive to me. So this first bit was fun
ACT TWO: I hated it. I'll never be able to fully articulate how much I hated the music from here on out. It took me straight out of the movie, it was AWFUL. I don't even know how to describe what kinda music it was but it was corny and cheesy and terrible. I didn't care for any of the humor during this pre-production stretch and none of it was working for me at all, I was zoning right out
ACT THREE: This movie might've been a 4/10 for me if it wasn't for the finale. It was hands down the best of the three acts. I really enjoyed seeing exactly how much had gone wrong during Act One and watching them improvise. The director throwing the drunk into people, the POM improvising, the guy who had to take a shit, the vomit, the camera operator falling, the pyramid, etc. All of the strange awkward bits from Act One were perfectly explained and it made some of the stage setting during awful Act Two worth it. I especially liked the weird zombie leg in the shed moment, when it was revealed it was a person with a cue card telling her to grab the axe. I lol'd
Overall it was inventive and fun enough. I liked the meta on meta on meta and the finale was amusing and saved the movie, I just wish I liked it as much as everyone else seemed to
★★★ good/interesting concept/would recommend
Misc - Meta: Last year it was Fright Night. Notttttttttt a contest, Fright Night was one of my favorites from last year. This was WAY more Meta but Fright Night was a lot more enjoyable for me. 2019's streak comes to an end
