BUMP!!!
I've been on a huge board game kick lately! Anyone have any new great games to report?
My issue is that I don't have groups to play with on a consistent basis. It's very spotty and when we get together, it's like 3 or 4 of us and they don't play super in depth games. I enjoy games that play like an RPG or something.
Played Betrayal for the first time about 2 weeks ago and I don't think I played with the best people, but it still showed a ton of potential. I liked it a lot!
How is this? I bought it, but have yet to play it. But I like deception or traitor games.

best new ones I've played lately have been Shadow Hunters and Secret Hitler
also tried:
Deception: Murder in Hong Kong (like Mysterium meets Mafia, p fun)
Arkham Horror
Eldritch Horror
Shadows Over Camelot
the two Horror games are alright but take waaay too long, like 4+ hours. SOC is similar-ish to those but I like it better cuz it's shorter and more importantly has a traitor mechanic
also would recommend this meta-game we tried last time called Pretense, which is like a board game night game which runs in the background the entire time. Basically everyone gets dealt secret "roles" they have to fulfill, and if you're able to dupe someone into doing something (e.g. one was "The Jock" and you had to get someone to give you a high-five) you steal their role, whoever has the most cards at the end of the night wins. It's gets p hilarious in that innocuous actions people are taking start getting thrown into question after a while, even if they're not related to the game

How is Secret Hitler? We have this wooden box which looks great, but we’ve never played it.
We are addicted to the Arkham Cardgame. It’s so good. Doing Dunwich Legacy for the second time, with a more interesting mix of characters.

I've played a game like that before called Assassin. Everyone has someone else's name and that is their target. If someone hands you something and you take it and they had your name, then you kill them and now their target becomes yours. It's like an all day long thing. Last person standing wins.
How was Shadow Hunter? I feel like you'd need the right group of people, but is it something that people who don't normally play board games would enjoy?
I've had my eye on Arkham Horror, but I'm nervous since it's only a 2 player game that could take a while. You'd need two people who are pretty into those types of games.
Same with SOC. Looked really fun but nervous if it's more of a niche thing

Arkham horror card game is a struggle to play for the first time, especially if none of the players have played it before. We took the card game on a vacation trip and it took me about 4 hours to understand the rules. Then playing was frustrating too as we still had to look up every word and detail. Not the best day of our vacation. However, it’s worth all this struggle as the scenarios/storylines are great. There might be youtube vids explaining the game.
We usually play it with 3 or 4 ppl, which is more fun imo. You need 2 versions of the game for that. You can play one scenario at a time, it takes 2 hours on average i think; it’s less time consuming than the board game.
We have not played our other favorites like Pandemic, Arkham board game, and Tokaido ever since we got into Arkham card game.

It's so fun. Very similar to Mafia but more...structured I guess? Like you always have some solid information to go off of based on people's actions, but at the same time there's enough wiggle room for the fascists to stay hidden, especially Hitler
And yeah we played with the wood box too, the artwork is awesome

Shadow Hunters is p easy to pick up, the rules might sound a little intimidating to a non-board game player at first but it's really easy to learn once you start playing
Arkham Horror supports up to like 8 players? Although it's flexible and even allows you to play solo. But yeah, that and SOC are definitely geared towards people that are into more in-depth games

Thanks!
I've seen those games that allow one person to play, but I don't know I'd find a ton of fun in that. Board games are fun because it allows everyone to sit and be together. I like co-op games because I think it's fun to also work together, but I do like how Betrayal has that mechanic of a traitor. It kind of reminds me of Lab 2.
I have Shadow Hunters on my wishlist. Maybe in the future. I've heard a lot of great things about Tokaido. I just don't really get what it's about other than it looks beautiful
