Looool I thought it was a nice touch without making it cheesey |
I actually called the reference pretty early in the movie, it made no sense that he had so much camera time otherwise.
|
I was totally against the robin inclusion in this series, but they did it in an acceptable manner forsure. That is to say it was a nice "Heh robin reference lulz" not a "OMFG robin spinoff". Glad it didnt resort to some gay red costume cameo either, man that would have sucked so hard. Like I said, I think they did in a cool reference way, nothing more. |

Ya my other post was a joke. That'd be an awful movie | "So, uh, what are we saying here? If we save LA from a nuclear bomb, then you and I can get together for dinner and a movie?"

I liked it!

I agree with Boc about how I actually didn't want Batman to die at the end. And I think it's because this movie, much more than TDK at least made me care about him. He actually had an ARC, and I found some of his scenes quite touching. His climb out of the pit in particular was really good.
It was also very entertaining. The characters and scenarios were COMIC BOOKY without totally derailing Nolan's universe. My favorite example of this was SCARECROW'S COURT, which was uncharacteristically WEIRD. Really liked that he got some time in every movie.
The relationships were handled pretty well I thought. They were both a bit rushed (more on that later) but he went through enough (and had enough SEXUAL TENSION) with Selina Kyle that I could BUY it, and with Tate, it just seemed to WORK. It actually felt pretty real, just in the sense that they were attracted to each other and then slept with each other.
It sort of felt cheapened by the TALIA reveal, which I wasn't sure was actually going to happen. The reveal of Bane as Ra's's son was stupid, and I was pretty disappointed until it turned out that Talia was actually the CHILD WHO ESCAPED.
And Bane actually was a pretty threatening villain! Hardy obviously didn't top Ledger's Joker, but he had a really effective PRESENCE and I liked his voice a lot (after I got over the obvious ADR-ing). But I wasn't sure about WHO HE WAS. What was he trying to prove? The Joker had an obvious point, and given all the Occupy references I'm sure that Bane was also meant to represent something. Did he just want power? Was he trying to prove anything? That people would, after being stuck under Bane's equivalent of Martial Law while living with a NUKE for 6 months be a bit distressed?
AND SPEAKING OF THE 6 MONTHS what was with this movie's pacing? I'm pretty sure about a year passed altogether, and much of it happened just in DIALOGUE. WHICH BRINGS ME TO ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH EXPOSITION, everybody got a fucking MONOLOGUE in this movie. It worked with Lucius because that is just WHAT HE DOES. But Bane and Catwoman and Talia all just TOLD everything about themselves and what their plans were.
Also Michael Caine being sad makes me feel sad |

yeah that was another one of the reasons why I thought this movie could've been much longer (actually, I read something the other day about how Nolan's original draft would've been FOUR HOURS LONG). The passage of time just did not work well in a lot of parts.
Like, it seemed like the cops were only down there for a couple days when it really was a couple MONTHS. It's kind of nitpicky I guess but they at least should've had beards, unkempt hair, etc when coming out of there.
And in general, it would've been nice to linger on what those couple of months were LIKE for the citizens of Gotham. It just seemed glossed over. I understand that wasn't what the movie was ABOUT so it's not like they could spend a lot of time on that but they could've at least thrown in a couple scenes illustrating how Gotham under Bane's rule was like for the average citizen. They SORTA showed some of it with the Scarecrow court scenes (which were some of my favorites of the movie) but could've expanded on it a bit more. |

Yeah there was more emphasis on arkham and the grim repression. Tdk and the tdkr lacked the same Gotham atmosphere. Moar like NYC gets terrorized.
But then the characters and emotion in 2 and 3 were stronger. |
|
I feel Gotham was better portrayed in this than TDK tbh but still not so much emphasis as in BB. |
|
Wow. That was great. Not as good as TDK but I didn't expect it to be. TDK > TDKR > BB, but they're all pretty close
|
|
I reeeally liked how they had Bane break Batman's back just like in the comics. Wasn't expecting that since Bane wasn't the same ridiculously bulky character, but I'm very glad they kept that in. Bane was certainly no JOAKER, but I thought he was still a pretty good villain. I did have some trouble understanding some of what he said though
Oh and the SCARECROW CAMEO was so awesome. As was seeing Carcetti and Bunny (:
Catwoman was pretty good but I feel like she got kinda underused tbh. Especially for a character that was so crucial to the ending. I've never seen Batman Returns so I'm not sure how she holds up to Pfeiffer's (though I'm sure they're completely different characters anyway) but I feel like Hathaway definitely held her own
The ONE MAJOR GRIPE I had with the movie is neither Bruce's romance with Miranda or Selina felt natural at all. They both felt very rushed and forced, ESPECIALLY the relationship with Miranda. Also, I feel like Bruce recovered from his broken back a little TOO quickly. This movie may have been ~3 hours but there was so much going on I feel like they could've made it at least 3.5 to give it more room to BREATHE.
The Robin thing caught me totally by surprise. NOT SURE how I feel about that tbh. It's kind of weird how he's named Robin but really he's just the next Batman since he's not a sidekick to anyone. I'm just glad Robin didn't play an active role in any of the movies, I'm FINE with them leaving him as part of an open-ended conclusion
I really hope no one continues this. There's definitely potential to but I feel like it gave very good closure to the whole story. There was some open-endedness of course but it's better to leave that to our imagination |

Pretty much agree with you here on everything Boc. It could have been a longer movie and still have room to grow. I loved everything about it but definitely felt Catwoman was underused. Would've liked some more Batman disappearing acts and using his gadgets like in Batman Begins to disappear as well too but I do love his brawls with Bane. All side characters were done brilliantly. Talia Al Ghul was obvious and I wasn't surprised, still loved how they did it though. |

Liked how Blake was exploring the cave also at the end and becoming the "new Batman". Don't think it was Robin as other friends suggested and don't really get why they used that name too. I assume it was more to leave open to interpretation. |

Well the kid isn't going to be named John "Batman" Blake. Robin atleast fits as a regular name. |

I think it was just an inside joke really. It seems pretty clear that he's meant to be the next Batman since he's not anyone's sidekick. And if he really WAS Robin, that wouldn't be his ACTUAL name anyway. It'd be pretty silly to use your given name as your secret identity (:
It's kinda like how there was (supposedly) a reference to Killer Croc with that line Blake said about "giant alligators in the sewer" but it wasn't actually saying that Killer Croc is real in this universe, it was just a wink to the fans. |

yeah I loved the Killer Croc reference, And yeah I guess it would be dumb to be named Robin playing as Robin. I really wanted to see a Catwoman/Bane fight at some point. |

lol that fight probably would've ended in like 10 seconds. Bane would snap her like a twig
PERSONALLY I would've really liked to see a Talia/Catwoman fight. Or Talia fighting anyone really. Her father was Batman's fukn trainer and we didn't even get to see her fight |

Killer Croc was in gotham knights which is canonly between bb and tdk. I thought it was a reference to that actually. |
