Wouldn't you just learn you received a gift, and not who the gift was from? The way merc replied, seemed to imply that he knew that it was Shadow specifically that visited him, and also that Shadow wasn't the one that tried to kill him.

Yeah I'm not sure what role would allow the targeted player to know other than a recruitment. Otherwise you would just know a potential action, but not the player performing the action.
