I m might have to restart due to a glitch. I can't use the work bench in sanctuary for some reason and I never figure out how to fix it. Is the sanctuary quest line important?

There's a way to automatically pull up the workbench menu anywhere within the settlement, does that not work too? On Xbox One, you hold select while standing in the confines of a settlement and the workshop shows up.
I think Sanctuary is important since it's the first settlement area, but nothing too important story-wise has come from the missions to build beds, food, defenses. I don't think it has any impact on clearing out other areas and recruiting minutemen.
edit: sorry if that was a dumb question to ask, I wasn't aware of being able to pull up the menu anywhere in the area after missing the prompt. hoping that works at least.
I hate when companions are more of a hindrance than a help...always getting right in your way when you're trying to interact with any other object, blocking doorways, pushing you off a ledge right into a battlezone. lol
Dogmeat's the worst companion which is disappointing because it's ideally the one I'd WANT to be with me the most. I might just round up all my companions at some point and command them to all stay in a certain place in one of my settlements, then build an inescapable pen around all of them. No idea if they'd actually stay there after I'd left but I really hope they would so I could have my very own companion zoo
I got to Diamond City right before I had to quit and say farewell to my desktop for a while. It was pretty tempting to continue without going there and build up Sanctuary some more and finish up some side quests, but I really want to get the story finished sooner rather than later.
I keep telling Dogmeat to hang back now. I feel bad letting him get hurt but I'm also such of holding back in combat. I know he can take it but still.

Nick is pretty useful too for hacking into terminals that you're unable to.
So...at a certain point in the game,

more members of the BoS show up at the Cambridge Police Station, and they essentially move in there, which removed some of the desks to make room for more beds. Well, I kept dropping off all my shit in one of the desks there so I could pick up more stuff. And now all my stuff is gone...those damn bastards better have put it somewhere safe.
