THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN

I enjoyed it. It was his toughest foe yet.

Garfield played the part much goofier and quirkier than Macguire did. The music was rly shitty. And there was one HORRRRRRIBLY cheesy scene that you will -__- when you see.

but overall, quite the ENTERTAINING flick

TV - Russel Brand's BRAND X on FX

I don't know where to begin. If you're not watching this show, you're missing out. There's no way it will last for more than one season, but I hope it somehow does. The best description of the show is "it's the actualization of a stand-up comedian's worst fear of bombing on stage." The first episode the audience didn't laugh once until about fifteen minutes into the show - and it's supposed to be non-stop comedy. You can understand maybe every other word out of his mouth and it was like he had one joke during that first episode about the Dalai Lama that didn't land, but he kept coming back to it.

The second episode trumped it in spades, however. From square one you could tell they sweetened the audience with fake laughs, but even those didn't alleviate the weirdness. His producers obviously told him to try to be more edgy because he flew out of the gate with painfully unfunny jokes about dog semen and toddler sex. The audience just glared at him with contention. But there were three highlights that stood above all else.

1. My favorite part of episode 2 - Russel Brand is ranting about money ("So Dave, what's the deal with money, am I right??") and the camera man just quickly pans to the left and films two white mice that are on the stage for seemingly no reason. The audience laughs, the laughter tips Russel off that there's something wrong, and he says something to the camera man who turns the camera back to Russel.

2. Russel goes all renegade and declares that he is about to burn a dollar bill. The crowd has ZERO reaction. No laughs, no outrage - no one even rolled their eyes. It was like "okay, we're just along for the ride Russel. Do what you must." The look on his face as he said it showed that he was expecting adulation or cheers or something - but he got nothing, and it was GLORIOUS.

3. In the first episode he tried to work the crowd to no avail. In the second episode he tried again to even more disastrous results. He sat on some woman's lap and laid out the brilliant line of "why'd your brother wait until 13 to get circumcised, is he a perv?" And the lady, who looks completely uncomfortable, looks at him and says "well. he's Muslim." There is again ZERO laughter during all of this. After Russel realizes he has bombed he jumps up and shouts something about the crowd being either "allowed to laugh" at the joke or "not allowed to laugh" at the joke. I couldn't really tell. But his outburst results in a couple of pity laughs.

Here's a shitty clip of that third point:

You can watch him flounder Thursday nights after Wilfred and Louie.

Ya children of men was great. Ussually suspects I liked too, but I guess the twist would have been less obvious back in the day; still great tho. Loved the characters

It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)

No, no it really wasn't. There were a few laughs (more than the equally ineptly titled Funny People), but still, I liked it anyway. A kid on the brink of a mental breakdown because of the pressure pushed onto him by his absent father wanting him to get into some prestigious college program trots off to kill himself but instead winds up at a doctor's office asking to have himself committed. He succeeds, and immediately regrets his decision when he sees that his problems are small potatoes compared to the people in the adult psych ward he gets put in with.

Zach Galifinakis stars as the leader figure for the psych patients (he's collecting money to throw a pizza party!), and he takes the kid under his wing and acts as kind of a father figure for the kid, but Zach of course winds up learning just as much from the boy as the boy did from him. Emma Roberts, the actress playing his love interest in the psych ward, is gorgeous and the various supporting characters were great. If it weren't for them I would have changed the channel on the movie. I also predicted it to take a dark turn at one point, but it never happened.

Legend (1985)

I'm a sucker for fantasy movies. I'd seen this one before, but I actually paid attention to it last night and I found that I really like it, even though it didn't go out of its way to do anything different to the formula. Except casting Tim Curry as the devil/"Darkness" - the best thing the movie did, for sure.

I just found out there is a Ridley Scott director's cut of this movie from 2002 that apparently makes it an AWESOME movie. I'm going to have to seek out this cut.
