Older "horror" (this was haaaaaaaardly horror) has been more miss than hit for me while doing these challenges. But if it's well made it's well made! I was really impressed with the whole production. The number of extras in some scenes was crazy. It obviously shows its age at times but overall I thought it held up. It was really well shot and the sets and scale were great And boy did it get VIOLENT! Quasi was out there YEETing people off that tower! Those rag doll bodies flying left and right made me laugh I kinda loved Mr doofus prince charming Gringoire, he was fun ★★★ average/good/interesting concept Misc - Gothic Horror: The Devils Backbone vs Bram Stoker's Dracula vs Hunchback of Notre Dame. Ezzzzzz. Fuck Devils Backbone! Super overrated. I liked Dracula a lot more than I thought and it gets the 2 points. I liked Hunchback a lil more than I thought I would and it gets the 1 2020: 25 2019: 23 2018: 24

Okay so, I really enjoyed the original. Joe Spinell is disturbing and the movie has this really gritty, disgusting look to it. It feels very in tune with the story its telling. This version just missed on most fronts for me. It’s too clean looking. Elijah’s performance is fine, but everyone else is pretty bruuuuuuuuuutal. I wasn’t really impressed with the kills either. Nothing like the Tom Savini head explosion in the first one. I will say though that the pov style shooting was really cool and a creative spin on the slasher genre. SCORE - 4/10 Gore - Extreme: Antichrist v Gozu v Maniac. Antichrist gets the EASY two points here. I’m giving Gozu the 1 point over Maniac. It’s fucking weird and makes no sense, but much more extreme than Maniac, imo. 0 points for s3 :(. S3: 16 S2: 27 S1: 23

When I was a kid, I went to the carnival and played a game where you throw a dart and whichever poster you hit, you get. I was DYING to get this sick Lion King poster. I was rubbing my hands thinking about all the cool compliments I would get once I hung that bad boy up in my room. I grabbed the dart, took aim, and ended up hitting Quasi Moto in his stupid ugly face. I was fucking pissed. Anyway, yeaaaa, this isn’t really horror. Which is unfortunate. But, that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it! I’ve got a soft spot for the older horror movies (Nosferatu, King Kong, Phantom of the Opera, and The Man Who Laughs) and while I didn’t enjoy this as much as any of those, I thought the overall look of the movie was gorgeous. I’ve been watching a lot of Charles Laughton and he’s great. Loved him in Witness of the Prosecution. In fact, if you haven’t seen Witness of the Prosecution, go watch that now! Back to the MOVIE, I wasn’t sure how to feel when Quasi was raining straight hellfire on the townspeople trying to save Esmeralda. Ya’ll on the same side! Regardless, Quasi throwing Frollo off the tower might be one of my favorite scenes of the 39. Gold. SCORE - 6/10 Misc - Gothic Horror. Devil’s Backbone v Bram Stocker’s Dracula v Hunchback of Notre Dam. A pretty straightforward matchup. Much like Curtis, I didn’t really CARE for Devil’s Backbone. It gets the 0. Hunchback was solid but Dracula has a great look to it with some great performances. S2 gets 2 points and Hunchback misses out on the lucky lady AGAIN and settles for the 1 point. OUCHIE! S3: 17 S2: 29 S1: 23

I don’t like this movie. I’m not a fan. I think it’s annoying. I don’t like any of the characters, and yea okay, Gizmo is cute but whatever! This movie wants to be so clever and meta, but it’s just a corny mess. Wow, look a Gremlin dressed as a woman! Oh wow, a Hulk Hogan cameo! Hey, Gizmo is dressed as Rambo! This movie throws so much at you and hopes something sticks. And I will admit, the Phoebe Cate’s monologue was great because its laughing at itself, something I wish it did more of. I also wish the Gremlins felt more threatening rather than a mild annoyance. I get the appeal but it’s just not for me. SCORE - 4/10 Monster - Small Creatures. Gremlins v Critters v Gremlins 2. What a SHIT SHOW of a category. This is one of my least favorite categories to pick, ironically so is Giant Monsters. There’s just NOTHING out there. It’s TERRIBLE! Anyway. Grelimins gets 2. Nosferatu the Vampyre

Been about a week and a half since I watched this so I don't have a ton to say, but I liked it I didn't realize the story of Nosferatu was just the exact story of Dracula, I thought there were differences. NOPE! Its the exact same story I've watched several times now so I was p disappointed of the same old tale But it was told fairly well. It had the classic Herzog vibe for sure. The tone and mood and and sound design and lighting and cinematography was all spot on Kinski was great and helped flesh out the character. Loved the creepy moment of him slowly approaching the lead while he was trying to sleep, that was the best part ★★★ average/good/interesting concept Monster - Vampire: Near Dark vs Thirst vs Nosferatu. Thirst is the easy 2 pointer for me, one of the highlights from last year and a fun take on a vampire story. Near Dark was also an original take but overall Nosferatu did it for me a bit more, mostly because of that annoying ass kid in Near Dark, fuck him 2020: 26 2019: 25 2018: 24

Terrible! Hated everything about it. They literally didn't know how to tell a joke, its so weird. They almost tried to be Airplane but had no idea what they were doing. Like they would just try to do some sorta gag but there was no.....JOKE! No punchline! It was so annoying. There were so many examples of this but I hate them all and will not type them up ★★ disappointing/uninteresting Monster - Small Creatures. Gremlins v Critters v Gremlins 2. So bad. Gremlins gets the 2 points handily. And Critters is THAT bad that I'm somehow giving Gremlins 2 a point. WOOF! All three seasons are very even which still surprises me, I cant believe this one is in first still 2020: 27 2019: 25 2018: 26

Fun movie! I enjoyed it From the director of I Saw The Devil, one of my favorites. Starring Choi Min-Sik AND Song Kang-Ho! Two of the very best, it was cool to see them in their early work. I do think Choi Min Sik was underutilized tho Someone on LB called it a Korean Coen Brothers movie which is pretty perfect. Sometimes it reminded me of Clue, the way all the guests would show up to the place and almost immediately die. I was gonna say it was a mix of Clue and another movie but......I forget what! Every man in this movie who wasn't a family member was VERY rapey! They made them the worst before killing them off which was nice Overall a good time if you like dark humor ★★★½ very good/well executed Psychological - Madness & Paranoia Jacob's Ladder vs. Berberian Sound Studio vs. The Quiet Family Easy two points goes to Quiet Family, the other two are nothing special. I remember Jacobs Ladder and Berberian being neck and neck last year but I ended up giving it to Berberian aaaaaand I'm gonna do it again! Jacobs Ladder was such a letdown 2020: 29 2019: 26 2018: 26
