I loved about 65% of this movie and the ending lost me just a TAD BIT. I feel like I would have really enjoyed this if the two stories were separate? I'm not sure. The latter half of the movie almost felt like a sequel to the beginning? In a way? I'm not sure. It wasn't as strong as the beginning for me.
But the first part of this movie was a really fun time for me. I loved the concept and I felt like the slow burn of Clara figuring out what was going on with Ana was really well done. I really wish I'd gone into this movie without knowing it is a werewolf film because I feel like that would have been a REAL GOOD SHOCK. But it was still a fun surprise and that scene where she gives birth to the little werewolf dude was one of my favorites. The end was still pretty fun, I just could feel my interest fading a bit. But I think it's because I'd gotten so much time to really enjoy Ana & Clara, Ana's son kind of felt shoved in my face that I was supposed to like him. When he was kind of a brat. |

I read a bunch of Junji Ito a few years ago. Uzumaki gets praise for being his longest and I guess most developed work but I think it doesn't quite work as a whole. It definitely has some interesting chapters and cool imagery but the end of the story just kind of happens and some of the vignettes are downright silly. There is one part involving people turning into snails that legitimately disturbed me though and got under my skin in a way no horror movie or story has.
Amigara Fault is definitely a good one. Glyceride will make your stomach church. Gyo straddles the line between being kinda silly and being horror, but it's about the ocean which automatically terrifies me so it worked for me.
I like his sillier ones as well; The Sad Tale of the Principal Post is so dumb it makes me laugh every time (it's a very quick read at only four pages): https://imgur.com/gallery/qqGe7
He did a really cute one called Junji Ito's Cat Diary based on his real life cats, framed as if they're spooky and devious but actually they're just harmless adorable cats. I def recommend even though it's not scary.
Love that he did officially-sponsored guest artwork for Pokemon as well:

That's a lot of input Ecto, pretty hefty post.

I'm not sure which is my favorite: his nonchalant observation there or the super subtle commentary of the piece.

I suggest casual vandalism and then surveillance of one of the sites to uncover the identity of the mystery fan. Lay in wait, spring your trap. Then mail off a journal to me that details your experience before you get arrested and I will promise to make some shitty art house film about it. Once convicted I will sell the journal instead to a macabre collector and use the money to fund my true vision: live action The Sad Tale of the Principal Post.

I watched Berberian Sound Studio. It was fucking weird and I think I need to sleep on it before I write anything about it. If I can write anything about it.

This felt like a weird dream. I started feeling a little restless halfway through and my attention started drifting, but I'm not marking that against the movie. Anyway. It is very Giallo, and I might make the executive decision to swap it into the Giallo category and find something else for Madness and Paranoia. I liked the unique setting; sound engineer working in a studio reminded me of Pontypool and the talk radio station.
I came into the movie biased in favor of it because I loved the lead (Toby Jones) in The Mist and what feels like at least twenty other films. I don't think it's mean to say that he has a unique look, and that the unique look works wonders for him in the role of a guy feeling professionally and mentally alienated in an unfamiliar and foreign country.
It started weird, and it only got weirder. And made me want watermelon more than any other film ever has. Also shoutout to the scene where some foley legend they called The Goblin (Suspiria shoutout?) come in and record some hilarious noises. It was loud and non-stop for like two minutes, Like a morning zoo radio show come to life out of nowhere. |

We should pick one for our club to rabbit together. Is there one on all of our lists? Or a majority.
