i actually like it better than the first season already. I found many of those characters to be quite cartoonish, while this season has a lot more relatable and interesting characters.
i would say to compare this to TD season 2 is a gross misjustice. it's at least at par storyline-wise. the split screen storytelling is awesome.
I feel like the cartoonishness of the characters is kinda the point tbh. Just like the movie, the whole show has a black comedy tone to it. I think they're still maintaining that this season, I don't see these characters as any 'deeper'
If you're looking for relatable characters though, I think Molly was a really well-drawn character
yeah its a personal preference. I think the movie (and s1) both had two types of characters: Cartoonish or relatable. This season has people who combine both.
speaking of cartoonish, I love the lesbian hairstylist. such a stark change from her character on House of Cards
The fight in the butcher shop was so tense. I felt pretty bad for Walt Jr. Gerhardt, growing up in that world and having to try to prove himself this way. Those characters are always pretty tragic and I'm shocked that he didn't die tbh. I figured for sure it'd be a botched hit and that he'd take a clever to the face so it's nice that they subverted expectations. Ed killing the other guy was great and so was the scene between Walt JR (I wanna say Charlie??) and the cashier
Everything's been really great. Lou gets better and better each episode, his highlight one was when he went toe to toe with Mike Milligan and Dodd
Loved the closing shot of the Blumquists in the latest one. Ed's story is pretty sad and I can't see it ending too well for him but I hope it does
I never did watch the first season but I just caught up (and watched the leak) on this season and holy shit is this great. I've become a Patrick Wilson fanboy. I've enjoyed pretty much every role of his that I've seen. Most recently (prior to this) that weird Bone Tomahawk movie. I thought I would forever think of him as Nite Owl from Watchmen but he has shed that skin.
S02E07 - It's already up on some sites, don't click unless you've watched it!

What a mess! Now both sides have a person lying to the head of their respective organization/family about how one of their own was killed and the authorities picking a side, I assume shit is about to really explode.
And poor Blumquist's reputation is going to keep growing when Hanzee sees him meet with Milligan and pull Dodd out of his trunk. I love the Hanzee character but he's so badass that I hope Blumquist winds up killing him with a turkey leg or some shit. I loved the build up the Undertaker was getting only to get smoked in like five seconds.
And lastly, Bear putting a bullet in Simone's head. I kept thinking he was going to have a change of heart and let her go but nope. That whole scene reminded me of the Pine Barrens episode of The Sopranos. I really disliked Simone's character so I'm happy to see her gone.
The past few episodes have really kicked things up a notch! Easily some of the most tense scenes I've ever seen in this show full stop.
It's been a good follow up season, the only complaint I could make being that I don't feel very invested in the characters.
Maybe its just me but I don't find myself rooting for Ed & Peggy like I did Lester. (which is odd because they have much more understandable motives). I have the same problem with Lou & Betsy. Cool characters, but I don't care about them anywhere near as much as I did Molly or Gus in season 1.
I'm not saying that I don't feel anything for them at all, its just there is a significant difference compared to the cast of season 1 for me.
Still don't get what all of the UFO shit is about or why aliens would intervene in Sioux Falls. But it was hilarious how basically "whatever" a majority of the characters were to the fact that a fucking giant UFO was hovering in front of the motel. Existing solely as a means to save Lou's life before leaving.
Was a very... wtf moment. Not sure if I want there to be more about it in the finale or if I just want them to go ahead and pretend that it didn't happen. Anyway, Hanzee is still a lunatic fringe badass, stabbing Mama Gerhardt in the abdomen while looking into her eyes. Stone cold, chief. He's such an efficient killer that I will be completely surprised if he doesn't die to the luck o' the Blomquists.
@zersch I'm kinda hoping they don't acknowledge the UFO again (: I have no idea how I feel about that moment. It was a great WTF moment and the show doesn't have an ultra-serious tone anyway so I guess I like it more than dislike it?? That's one of the most left field moments I've seen in a show. I thought for sure it'd just be Bear's hallucination before dying
That opening and narration throughout was so good. I love that they brought Martin Freeman back
I have no idea what this finale's gonna be. No Gerharts anymore which is crazy. So it's just Lou, Milligan, Hanzee, and the Blumquists. Lou's gonna be chasing after Hanzee who's gonna be chasing after the Blumquists, but I dunno where Milligan fits in there
- Nick Offerman's character is named Karl Weathers
- Karl and Bear's scene outside the police station
- Bear in general taking the spotlight suddenly. He has a great presence. His scene with Simone was great
- Mike Milligan continues to be awesome. Loved him killing The Undertaker right away
- Betsy's scene with Karl
- Hank and the weird symbols. Wut
- Dodd's facial expressions to Peggy shit thoughout all of episode 8
- Peggy stabbing Dodd so suddenly
- Peggy's mental break
- The fight while Ed was hanging
- Hanzee showing up/killing Dodd/slow mo while getting stabbed by Peggy
- The narrator. FREEMAN! That was cool and it worked so well, especially when talking about Hanzee's betrayal
- Hanzee in general. What a character. I never would've expected the season to boil down to him. He's pretty much dictating how everything is going right now. Him betraying Floyd was brutal, I was kinda rooting for her
- The music that kicks in when Lou jumps back in his car and turns around
- Bear's death was great. Another character who emerged recently and has been really great
- The UFO. My dad fucking SPOILED IT!!!!!!!!! I was so mad. Still great tho. Many seem to be pissed, I'm all for it
- The entire shootout. The idiot cops talking about pissing in sinks and pools and all dying in their boxers and white t-shirts
- Ben Schmidt stepping it up and not being a dumbass when killing the two Gerhardts
- Split screen was used the best in these two episodes
- Hanzee tracking them and killing the gas station clerk felt so No Country For Old Men to me. The suspense and the way it was shot, one shot in particular was like straight out of that movie. Then I quickly realized that was a Coen brothers movie. GO FIGURE!
- Mike Milligan's "Okay then" when arriving too late at the massacre
