's a good point. The idea, though, is that you have no idea who considers you a friend and who does not. If you run into someone who isn't fighting you, for whatever reason, you're automatically considered to be in an alliance with them. If they're actually your friend, you're pretty safe from being attacked by them. If they're not actually your friend, they could betray you at any moment, so it might be better to betray them before they can betray you. But then again, if it's someone that you consider a friend, your odds of winning that fight are reduced, so it might be better to just run the hell away. It's a gamble.
