It was aiiiiiiiiiight. I wasn't too high on it really
Honestly I think a big part of the issue is Mary. I'm SO glad she's dead. The character did absolutely nothing for me, she just took up way too much time. She bogged down S3 quite a bit too. It's the only season I haven't rewatched
Usually I prefer overarching plots but I might prefer case of the week episodes for this show. They're usually so much more fun when they're done well. My favorite episodes of the series are case heavy episodes. This episode was another that failed to deliver that and also didn't really have any fun Sherlock/John stuff which I also miss from the first two seasons. And based on the ending I don't think we'll be getting any of that for the rest of the season :( . Or the rest of the series??? Sad
I've got high hopes for the next two tho. Now that Mary's outta the way it should be better, no distractions. Tony Jones' character looks good |

So disappointed! All that waiting for...that.
The show seems to have forgotten what it's main strengths are, namely the Sherlock/Watson dynamic, a good story, and a good antagonist.
I think it may have at least achieved the latter with Euros, who was a pretty good villain, though not on the same level as Moriarty and Magnussen. But everything else was pretty bad.
Every season prior to this has had a cool mystery at the center of it. This one didn't really have one.
And there were some really glaring plotholes in each episode.
A major reason this season sucked for me was Mary. She was a lame character, who got way too much focus this year. I thought the twist with her last season was cool and made for a good story, and she was an okay addition to the cast when she existed on the periphery with characters such as Miss Hudson, Molly etc. (I would have rather had more screentime from them than Mary) But making her the one of the main focuses of S4 was a bad idea.
The first episode started very strong, and they even teased us with a cool mystery, loosely based on one of the classic stories (It was about someone going around breaking busts of Napolean, rather than Thatcher) I lost interest as soon as the story became about Mary's past instead. It felt like they were treading old ground. Did anybody really care about Mary's past?
Suddenly the episode became a spy thriller instead of a detective story. Anyway, it became really obvious she was going to die about halfway through the episode, and after she did I had high hopes the rest of the season would be good!
But no. Sherlock got a disk with 'Miss Me?' written on it. My first thought was that it might be the start of the Seasons central mystery. Maybe it would be Moriarty. But oh wait no, it was a video Mary made in case she died. THAT IS SO MUCH MORE EXCITING. Even dead, she still managed to make the following episode crappy.
Sherlock/Watson been at odds with each other and the Jimmy Savile esque serial killer were neat ideas, but they fell flat in execution. It was another episode less about Sherlock/Watson and more about Mary's weird task to save John Watson. Tbh I cringed every time Mary was on screen, especially the scenes with Ghost Mary. Ugh
I don't know why they elevated such a weak character to such a high level.
In the finale, they finally moved on from her, and it happened to be the best episode. Finales tend to be the best anyway, but it helped that the show started playing to it's strengths again. I still thought it was subpar in comparison with previous seasons, but it had some bright spots. Mycroft/Sherlock/Watson were entertaining, and Euros' game was cool. I though the revelation that she was the little girl in the plane made no sense though. But at the same time, I kept bitching throughout about how unrealistic it was for the plane to still be in the air all that time.
But the last scene was awful. The one were Mary gives that gay monologue. This was me:
Is it just me or did this show try really hard to be quirky at times this season, in the same way Doctor Who does? That is a really annoying trend in British TV shows that make it big in America, and it baffles me.
I hope it's better next season. Oh, and I'm actually glad they didn't bring Moriarty back for real.

lol I agree with everything you said Wikey
Finally got around to watching episodes 2 and 3. My last post in here was hailing the fact that Mary died and that the season could continue without her. NOPE!!! She was way too heavily involved in episode two and then she ruined the end of three for me
These "from the grave" moments a la Jigsaw can be wayyyy too much and way too hard to swallow. Here's 10 bucks, pls deliver this DVD to Sherlock and Watson in 2 weeks, it will end up being very fitting to their current predicament! I hate it. Moriarty popping up and doing it is fun and fits him if used sparingly, but Mary doing it too really diminishes that. I also just think the actress doesn't add much, the character never interested me at all
Euros however was pretty fun. Toby Jones was also pretty good. I don't like how Sherlock himself always tries to build each new villain up to be the biggest piece of mastermind filth he's encountered yet though, he kept saying that for Jones but Moriarty and Magnussen were way better
3>2>1 for sure. The series very well may be over sadly. They've brought it to a point where I'm really interested in them continuing though. I want CLASSIC Sherlock. One isolated case, Sherlock and Watson's fun banter, clever Sherlock deductions, fun side characters getting involved, and a new villain of the week. SOME overarching plot but there's no need to have each case so heavily wrapped up in it each time. No more Mary. Pls
I'd honestly have been fine with Moriarty being alive even if it does diminish his great death episode, he's just such a great character and perfect villain. I loved when he came back and was sad during the flashback reveal
Decent season, better than s3 which I barely remember. I think the show COULD reach the s1 and s2 height again if it continues in the direction this finale hinted at, but I'm worried they're either finished or too blind to see what makes 1/2 so much better than 3/4 |

I'm a big Sherlock fan, like of the character, and I think they've done a really great job modernizing the character on this show. | --------------------
