The biggest game in Icelandic football history is scheduled to take place on the 15th of November here in Iceland. This game, along with a game played on the 19th of november in Croatia, will decide if Iceland will travel to Brazil for the World cup.

Iceland has never been so close to qualifying for a major international tournament in football. That partnered with immense national pride you can imaging the hysteria here. There has never been so much excitement surrounding the national football team. As a football player myself this is great and its finally fun to watch Iceland play football.

Icelands national stadium only takes 10k people. 1k tickets will be handed to the traveling Croatians and 1k tickets will be given to companies and sponsors of the football association. Which leaves 8k for ticket sales here in Iceland.

Considering the hysteria a LOT of people want go to the game and everyone has been waiting for the confirmed date on which they will start the sale. A lot of people even signed up for "ticket watches" where they would be sent emails regarding when the ticket sale would start.

At 4 in the morning today ticket sales suddenly opened. With no warning or any kind of announcement from the football association. It was sold out by 7:30 this morning, before most of the country even woke up.

So I have, and majority of the country been robbed of the chance to see one of the biggest games in the history of Icelandic football. Most of us didnt even get a chance to TRY and get tickets. They just randomly open the sales at 4 with no announcement. Its obvious not everyone will get to attend the game, but being robbed of the chance is just angering.

There has been some news surfacing that select people knew about the sudden night sale of tickets and they where probably quick enough to acquire them. Probably friends of the football association.

A lot of tickets have been surfacing on websites today on the black market at 5-6 times the value. One of these black marketers claims to have 30 tickets to sell. Friends of the board of the football association perhaps? Lunacy!

The Football Association claims this was done "because the servers of the ticket selling site (midi.is) couldnt handle the load of selling 8000 tickets". 3000 tickets where sold at a 15minute period between 7:15-7:30 and the site has claimed it can easily handle "more than 20.000 requests", as the site was created with a lot of load in mind. So thats obviously a load of crap.

So why do it? Corruption springs to mind. Make sure their friends and the "select" people who knew about the sudden night sale would get their tickets. I cant really think of any other reason...

No one could have actually thought starting the sale at 4 in the morning, with only select people knowing about it, would resemble anything thats fair.

The Football Association has said they are "sorry" and are going to rethink the ticket selling system. Why not render all the tickets from the sale today invalid and hold another fair sale where everyone can participate? Or just have everyone apply for a lottery (which would be controlled by a third party company, dont trust those assholes at the football association) where they will draw 8k people from the pot.

Sorry you didn't get a chance at tickets :( For the national game that was local to me they gave first chance at tickets to season ticket holders but all tickets outside of that were sold through lottery over the course of a week so there weren't any server issues. They did say they had the same concern about crashing the system Sucks they played it that way, I'd be pissed too.
