That blood splatter scene really got me good. And the drone with the razor blades was so over the top, I yelped. I loved how they never took anything too seriously. When the kid came back to Chucky manhandling the cat, I really lost it.
I AGREE! I think it was one of the most fun scary movies I've seen in a minute. Comparing it to slither is p good. I loved how modern they made it. The "I had a really productive sweet 16" line was another good one.
I've just been quoting it to my roommate since we saw it. "You Hobbit motherfucker!"
was too good to pass up. Also had no idea that Mark Hamill was the voice of Chucky until the credits rolled and I loved it. |

Okay, I think this is my list for this year. I cannibalized my list from last year since there was a lot of good shit I didn't get to. Swapped out the two Dracula for Let Me In/Let the Right One In. Asterisks are there for categories I struggled with and could switch out. I also committed to a few more 2019 theater movies to keep it fresh.

Not as bad as I thought it would be (not high praise), but it didn't know when to end and went comically over the top by the end. It was basically Cube (really: played out almost exactly the same minus an autistic man) but with escape room puzzles so all of the characters are constantly running around looking at everything and trying to figure out if it's a clue. "There's a blue shoe here... no wait two blue shoes! 'Two blue shoes' has three syllables, the first digit of the twelve digit code is 3!" It reminded me of Jim Carrey in the Number 23. If I had randomly picked this from Netflix to watch I would probably have liked it a little more, but it's taking a spot on this list that could have probably gone to something a lot more interesting than it wound up being.
I don't really have anything insightful to say about it, sorry. It wasn't an insightful movie.
Oh there was this one thing I really rolled my eyes at. Early on the characters are introduced to what seems to be a character in the storyline of their escape room called Dr. Woo Tan Yu. They kept on saying his name and finding documents with his name on it. From the first time they introduce him the name is so painfully obviously an anagram that I refused to unscramble it and trusted the movie to shoehorn it into every scene and have a "huge" reveal at the end. And I got what I wanted. (It unscrambles to No Way Out!!!) |

I was! I loved it! It's the reason why I kept the extra anime genre on my list.
And yeah, someone I know was telling me about him. (I forgot who tho tbh). They were telling me I should look into the Uzumaki manga or somethin?? I haven't gotten around to it tho.

The Enigma of Amigara Fault
I know it's kind of the internet's standard story when it comes to Ito, but it really stuck with me.

I read a bunch of Junji Ito a few years ago. Uzumaki gets praise for being his longest and I guess most developed work but I think it doesn't quite work as a whole. It definitely has some interesting chapters and cool imagery but the end of the story just kind of happens and some of the vignettes are downright silly. There is one part involving people turning into snails that legitimately disturbed me though and got under my skin in a way no horror movie or story has.
Amigara Fault is definitely a good one. Glyceride will make your stomach church. Gyo straddles the line between being kinda silly and being horror, but it's about the ocean which automatically terrifies me so it worked for me.
I like his sillier ones as well; The Sad Tale of the Principal Post is so dumb it makes me laugh every time (it's a very quick read at only four pages): https://imgur.com/gallery/qqGe7
He did a really cute one called Junji Ito's Cat Diary based on his real life cats, framed as if they're spooky and devious but actually they're just harmless adorable cats. I def recommend even though it's not scary.
Love that he did officially-sponsored guest artwork for Pokemon as well:
