I expected the Davids to come out on top with how the editing is going, so it wasn't a surprise by any means Christian stayed. If not for the John confessional that was obvious foreshadowing, that would have been completely random. There was no mention of targeting him either. He was definitely in a great spot within his alliance.

Negative note - I didn't want to see John go, especially not that way.
Positive note - At least two idols are out of play
