I post on a board that gives you a notification everytime your post is quoted or someone mentions you by going @Shadow or @KC. It's pretty neat I think.

Would that be something that does it on a static unchanging page or do you mean a notification each time you refresh or click into something new?

While pages that update themselves on the fly are becoming more and more common with the rise of web 2.0 I've yet to do exhaustive testing on this to see how feasible it is terms of resources. It's something I've always liked the idea of, but which might strain my server to the absolute maximum.

Like a lot of things though, without proper testing I have no way of knowing. With Classic ASP under-pinning the last site there was absolutely no way to do it that didn't devour resources but .Net is a lot more resource friendly. I'm already planning to incorporate a cbox that auto-refreshes for a test phase so I should be able to run some other stuff in there as well.

Once I know if it's viable or not I can say for sure if I want to keep it around.

Version 5 of proboards has a notification thing where it tells you if someone @ you/ quoted you/ or liked disliked you. That's how I thought of that. If crappy v5 can do it than ~~ IDK how hard that would be. I've never coded anything myself

It's doable, it's just a question of how much it'll bog down my server if I install it. V5 is terrible but Patrick Clinger has a lot more money than I do right now and has somewhere in the region of 20-30 high powered computers running Proboards. I have one mid-priced model so it makes a difference.

I say we plan a raid on Patrick Clinger.
