Has anyone read the Dark Tower series? I am contemplating if I should continue on with it. |
I have good sir, how far along are you? |
Finished the first one, currently like 10% done with the second one
Im going to spoiler this up if someone wants to read the first one

Bit MEH I think. The main story was uninteresting until at the very end (when he finally caught up with the man in black). Him uninterestingly travelling 95% of the book to get one interesting chapter at the end is really not satisfying.
The man in black did bring up some interesting points that might surface into some good plot but who knows!
I really hate the narrative. Sometimes its the main character thinking of the past. Sometimes its things happen in current time (is it happing in current time?) and then he mentions things that havnt happened which suggests that the character is telling the story in the future? I am really not sure. It kinda breaks the immersion when he mentions stuff like that
On that point, I hate how he spoils future plot points by mentioning how something is going to happen. Like he mentioned that the boy was going to die 3-4 chapters before it actually happened. Whats my motivation for continuing on reading if he is just going to continuously tell me everything interesting that might happen a few chapters ahead. Arg!
I also feel like some of his descriptions are really lacking. I feel myself reading the same sentences over and over trying to visualize whats happening but its just missing something. I dont always feel like this throughout the book, but it happened on numerous occasions. I dont know if its just King´s writing to go straight to the point but it is kinda annoying to not be exactly sure what is happening. I sometimes have to read a bit further to get more context and then be like "oh, thats probably what happened". I didnt have this problem when I read Pet Sematary, which I really liked.
Ive started with the second book but it isnt really motivating me to keep on reading. Why should I be interested in these 3 people he is looking for? Maybe I just dont care what happens to the Gunslinger? :D Maybe Game of Thrones has just spoiled me with all their interesting characters!

Well the 2nd book is better than the 1st and the 3rd and 4th are really the best books in the series.
I thought the first book started off slow but the flashback stuff to when Roland was a kid and training to be a gunslinger was the stuff i really liked about that book.
King does usually foreshadow wayyyyy too much and wayyyy too specifically, but that was really the only one I remember sticking out throughout the rest of the series.
As a whole, this is one of my favorite book series of all time along with Game of Thrones. It might not be your thing but I know it picks up more and more as the story goes along. |
Ill give it more time then!
Yeah I agree that the flashbacks where a nice touch. I enjoyed some of them, some seemed to not really add much to the story but maybe they will make sense in the whole context of the story.

Just started Paper Towns. I'm hoping I'll be done with it before the end of this week. It's a little hard for me to get into it while I'm currently freezing in this office right now.

Finished!
Paper Towns.
At first, I didn't know what this book was about. I was expecting another TFIOS if I'm being honest. The book was a little slow-paced at first, but then it started to pick up. I decided to read it soon after shooting for the movie had ended, so I'm looking forward to going to see it. It's one of those books that makes you think about things differently, and there's a lot of references to books and poems throughout the book. It was p. good.

I just finished the divergent series final book Allegiant
Major spoiler
|
I can not believe the author killed off the protagonist of all 3 books. WHAT. I don't know why feeling sadness after completing the series is a good thing. IT'S LIKE WHAT WAS THE POINT. We read books because real life often doesn't have happy endings and we can escape into a fictional world where it can happen. Idk idk |

I'm having trouble getting myself to read Goblet of Fire. Like, I want to read it, but I guess I'm at a boring part, so it's hard to motivate myself to continue.

I read The Martian by Andy Weir not too long ago. Great read, and there is allegedly a movie coming out in the fall.
I'm current on George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, though I'm a little sour on it because it takes him 5 effing years to write any book. If you like that sort of fantasy fiction, I'd suggest Patrick Rothfuss' Kingslayer series (not yet complete), Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastard series (not yet complete), Peter Brett's Demon Cycle series (not yet complete), and Anthony Ryan's Raven's Shadow series (not yet complete). I hear good things about Brandon Sanderson's new series, Stormlight Archives (also not yet complete).
I was on a Cormac McCarthy kick a few years back. The Road is a great read. He has a complex writing style that is not for everyone though.

I had this same issue. The first three took me under a day each to read, that's if you factor in life etc. Then I got to Goblet and my progress slowed dramatically. |

Re-reading "61 Hours", by Lee Child. I like the Reacher series for the most part.
And after watching Clear and Present Danger, I have a hankering to go back and read (reread) the Clancy, Jack Ryan series ...

I read a lot of the Reacher series. Quick reads, but entertaining. Lately, I haven't been reading much as I've been stuck on the "We're Alive" podcast.
