It's something I've known for a long time but I spend quite a bit of time reading up on natural history and taxonomy. I imagine a lot of people don't make the distinction because the names are quite similar.
Kind of reminds me of the daddy long legs issue I was mentioning in the cbox a while back, how we refer to an entirely different species (the crane fly) as a daddy long legs. In that case it's just a regional (national) variation of an animal nickname, whereas in this case it's two distinctly different creatures. | | |

I heard. More than once today actually. lol I keep stalking my weather app, no snow yet, but off to the resort Friday for open house and to try to pick up boots, board and bindings for my daughter so she quits swiping mine.
