I used an SEM (Scanning electron microscope) for my grad/thesis work. It's so awesome.

Nature is full of weird geometry like that, but snowflakes are one of the more interesting cases. I don't think there's anything special about it, just that our brains are hard-wired to find patterns intriguing. Still cool though.
