Yeah, I don't buy that the US was behind the gas attacks.
However, I'm not sure Assad was behind it either. It seems very irrational for him to order something like this given he is winning the war against the rebels. He only stands to lose. But people do irrational shit all the time so I dunno.
Also, terrible choice of words from Spicer. But the way I saw it his point was that even the Nazis didn't endorse the use of chemical weapons on the battlefield. Which is sort of true. They did on occasion, but they could have used them a lot more.
Shitty analogy, sure. But the way the BBC reported it you'd think he denied the holocaust happened

It's more than a shitty analogy. Spicer specifically says that Hitler didn't use chemical weapons on his *own* people. Ignoring all those Germans, many of them Jewish, on PASSOVER, is more than just a bad analogy.
How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat?
Rule #1 When Comparing Anyone to Hitler: Just don't, especially if you are going to imply they are worse than Hitler.
Rule #2 When Comparing Anyone to Hitler: If you ignore Rule #1, you better damn well be extremely clear in your language and make sure that it applies in the situation.
Spicer's first reference was supposed to be a "At least Hitler didn't gas the enemy in WWII!". There is immediate problems with this statement, since even if Assad did strike the town, it is clearly differentiated from gassing enemy soldiers. This is why he was questioned on this, which Spicer then followed up with his "gas your own people" line. The point is he had a dumb analogy in the first place to try to justify a pretty much failed attack on an airbase and he just dug it deeper instead of dropping the analogy. The timing of the analogy during Passover also makes it insensitive at best and Nazi sympathetic at worst.
Other excellent examples of people not following Rule #1:
-The vegan who tells you you are worst than Hitler because at least Hitler didn't eat meat.
- Pretty much anybody who has compared another poster on the Internet to Hitler

Both sides used chemical weapons in WW2. WW1 was still fresh enough in everyone's mind that it wasn't used in battle terribly often by anyone other than Japan in SE Asia.
Wait I misremembered. The Allies didn't use them, but were prepared to do so, and basically had to put a choke collar on Churchill to keep him from it..

Don't tell me what to fucking do.
People that make rules about comparing Hitler are literally just like Hitler.

While Hitler is a nazi, not every nazi is Hitler.
I can draw a Venn Diagram if it helps! :P

If people don't understand Venn diagrams, this one should help them:
