Only God Forgives
I DUG IT
I remember reading something in a review about Tree of Life. Basically: "You can pause the movie at any moment, hang that frame on your wall, and it would be a piece art." I kept thinking of that quote as I watched this, and I think it applies even MORE to this movie tbh. Every single shot/musical cue/line of dialogue was so well crafted
THO I would've really liked to see this movie with a more traditional plot and narrative. I know that would be a different movie, but it's still one I'd like to see. If the relationship between the three family members was expanded on, it could've been crazy good I feel. Such interesting dynamics there
The minimalist/art house style was still really well done, but the hints of backstory we got for these characters made me really wanna see more content. It was a bit of a tease. It had a western revenge/Shakespearean tragedy vibe to the story and I love both of those things

The Secret World of Arrietty
A very delightful and cute fantasy movie from Studio Ghibli. I hadn't read the book it was based upon so I didn't know where the story was going. Having a character with a heart disease and going on about accepting his death was pretty ballsy for a family film but I think that's a good thing. This was from a first-time director and with Miyazaki retiring soon, I hope Studio Ghibli can still make movies as good as this without him. | Nintendo Network ID: EctoCooler47 |

yeah curtis it definitely moved to its own BEAT, and I enjoyed watching it so much that the lack of a traditional narrative was totally cool with me. I think more clarification on what they HINTED at regarding the familial relationships would have been damaging. the way you're meant to INFER everything that's happened in Julian's past adds a lot to the dreamlike atmosphere of the movie. Just as pure AUDIOVISUAL FEAST you have the brilliant cinematography, editing, and score by Cliff Martinez.
i don't think it was as OBTUSE as a lot of people made it out to be, but minimalist is a good word for it. Like Drive, it doesn't really have its characters SOLILOQUIZE. it's not necessary to have Julian state his every motivation (i've had people ask me WHY he decides to fight Chang), nor is it necessary for Chang's true role to be explained. I do think that the reason it's getting (in my opinion overly) labeled as ~artsy~ is the use of repulsive violence and the fucked up sexual dynamics. and the thai karaoke numbers don't help.

To me it took the great visuals of Drive and just stripped away all the narrative/characters/dialogue (what little Drive had of most of those things anyway). Obviously that's what he was GOING for, a minimalist movie, but I just didn't dig it. I think Drive struck the right balance there. It was still minimalist and ARTSY without going overboard

All this thread has done is made me realize how little time I actually spend watching films. I need to fix that.

Yeah it was those hints at the families strange background that really made me crave more. I do like that we're meant to fill in the blanks for ourselves and let our own imaginations decide what might've gone on there, but part of me still would've liked to see it out of curiosity because it intrigued me so much

12 Years a Slave - Devastating and beautiful. The brutality of it is overwhelming, but that doesn't stop it from being empathetic and compassionate.
Out of the Furnace - Pretty solid! tbh I feel like it should have been more EXPLOITATIVE. It was a bit too unsubtle and shallow to be the gritty, nuanced take on POST-INDUSTRIAL SMALL TOWNS that it clearly wanted to be. It should have been resigned to being CHRISTIAN BALE KILLS METH ADDICTS

Has anyone seen the new Disney movie, Frozen? I saw it with friends a few days ago and I feel like Disney's new movies just keep getting better and better--I liked it more than Wreck-It Ralph, which I liked more than Tangled. It very much reminded me of the classics like Beauty and the Beast with the large castle interiors and great songs. Of course it differs quite a bit from the source material of The Snow Queen, but as a Disney movie it works just how you'd want it to. | Nintendo Network ID: EctoCooler47 |

Frozen was really good. Took my little sister too it so it gave me an excuse to see it. | "So, uh, what are we saying here? If we save LA from a nuclear bomb, then you and I can get together for dinner and a movie?"
