Ok, sure. I agree that rape is under-reported. But what makes you think it was less under-reported in earlier years when times were less progressive?

This is Sweden's official rape statistics: Grey means rape, yellow means rape attempt.

You are better qualified to comment on this than me Herm, but I've heard that what constitutes rape/assault in Sweden is different to other western countries, which may be skewing the statistics.

Barring that, it may also be related to cultural problems caused by the vast amount of migrants Sweden has taken in. (INB4 anyone calls me racist for bringing this up)

But ye, I'm not sure. It's hard to find trustworthy stats.

Something I've never understood about the unreported thing is this: how does anybody have stats on unreported rapes?

If it was unreported, how does anybody know it happened? How did they get the stats on this?

Probably from polls, which I know should be taken with a grain of salt but that's true with any type of poll. I know there are stats on all types of unreported crimes, not just sexual assaults.

NYC was notorious for not filing reports under Guiliani make his "war on crime" look more successful. No report, no crime, right?

Yeah, rape is more broadly defined here, which is something I didn't learn until recently. These statistics are government sanctioned (BRÅ) so they're accurate, but the definitions may vary. Snaking a hand under the skirt of a female stranger would be classified as rape in the statistics here, but I assume that's not the case of other western countries.

Many on the right uses Sweden's rape statistics as an argument against migration, and while I agree we have difficulties with culture blending and integration, the rape statistics are not likely to feflect the refugees who came here a few years ago.

That's actually interesting, I wonder if at some point the definition of rape was widened and that came explain the big jump in the chart.

I believe that's possible, that and a combination of old rape charges being added to the more recent years.

Probably increased prosecution, police taking it more seriously, and society becoming more liberal/progressive

Actually, I noted the Giuliani stuff before Igor said things were "getting better". Again- if you don't report it, it doesn't go into the statistics, and nothing shows your war on crime as being successful as having less "reported" crime.
