ehhh! Two disclaimers. One, I watched this a month ago so the details are already fuzzy. Two, I kinda half watched it while looking up from my phone. I didnt think I would like because I knew exactly what to expect so I didnt give it a great chance, but I dont think I wouldve loved it either way Carpenter is so weird. He made the SIIIIIIIIINGLE best horror movie (The Thing) and the amazing Halloween but I have not been crazy about anything else hes done at all. Tbh thats kinda typical with these 80s and 90s horror legends isnt it. They each tend to have one or two huge hits and the rest of their filmographies are pretty bleak Anyway CHRISTINE! I got exactly what I expected. I think this is the fourth entry in the Stephen King writes about machines coming to life cinematic universe and none of them are all that great I remember liking the shots of the car fixing itself, those were pretty cool I didnt like the nerd kid turned Danny Zuko and uhh...I got nothing else! It didnt do it for me, it was just another basic Stephen King movie really p0[']/?:"()P ★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas Paranormal - Possession: We got a Carpenter showdown! This vs. Possession vs. Prince of Darkness. First goes to Possession very easily. Christine and Darkness are both 5s for me but I'm giving it to Prince of Darkness. I liked it! My first 7 of the batch iirc. Finally Agreed with Jacob about horror metaphors. Babadook, It Follows, Relic, all fun examples. It worked well here, using three generations was a smart choice. Especially for that ending shot of the three of them The grandma killed it, she was so creepy. Everyone was good, Ive always liked Emily Mortimer Again, I watched this weeks ago so its slipping for me a lil bit but I thought it was overall effective. A couple of gnarly bits including that nasty body horror ending. Good stuff overall, well made p0[']/?:"()P ★★★½ very good/well executed Paranormal - Haunted House: House on Haunted Hill vs The Haunting vs Relic. Relic takes on two titans in the haunted house genre and for me...comes out on top! The classics were fine, both a 6 for me, but neither really stood the test of time for me very much outside of the great House on Haunted Hill jump scare. I meannnnnn..........whatever! Its fine. I didnt hate anything about it. My favorite part was just the premise itself so credit to my man POE for that. I think it couldve been adapted way better I think I read that the movie is made up of some of his other short stories and you can kinda tell, its kinda disjointed? Theres some random shit in here for no real reason at all Vincent Price helps save it really, he was fun as usual I dont have anything else to say! ★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas Paranormal - Devil/Demon/Hell: In the Mouth of Madness v The Beyond v The Masque of the Red Death. I surprisingly kinda liked it enough! When it started and we had the scene between what I will refer to as the scientist kid and the daughter, as soon as they started talking I was like oh god we are in for a ROUGHHHHHHH time here. Dialogue was bad, acting was not great. It set a terrible tone right away and I thought I would hate it But once shit started hitting the fan I was kinda into it. Its not great but it was entertaining enough for me. Nic Cage doing his classic Vampires Kiss accent again was well worth it Definitely some Thing inspiration between the alpaca blob and the mom and son being merged together. Hands down the best part of the movie was the way those two looked, it was gnarly. The violent version was p gross too And hands down worst part of the movie is when the son went down the well to get the dog. One of the dumbest horror movie decisions in quite some time, it was just...annoying. How was he even gonna get back UP! ★★★ average/good/interesting concept p0[']/?:"()P Misc - SciFi Horror: Scanners vs Beyond the Black Rainbow vs Color Out of Space. WOOF! What a weak showdown. Congrats Color! I did not like Scanners and Black Rainbow at all. I did not like Scanners just a bit more, it gets no points. I was also surprised how much I dug this, but boiiii did I dig it. A seven is a bit generous but I was having more fun with this than all my sixes for the most part I have a soft spot for slashers and this ticked all the boxes for me. Masked killer, group of characters isolated, unique setting. All fun. I like that they just made the killer a madman instead of trying to explain anything I felt like I saw future horror movies in here ALLLLL over the place. It felt pretty influential to me even tho I never hear anyone refer to it. Even small things like the scenes between the two guard Cops, they reminded me of the two in the recent Halloween I love that dickhead director. I love that he started off awful and then started actually caring and tried to bring everyone together but was still actually kinda awful. His arc was fun Love the colors. Love the style. It definitely stands out from the pack back then for me because of its style. An 80s campy slasher with actual INSPIRED DIRECTION! Who knew. Lots of shots were fun Yes the characters were very stupid a lot of the time and couldnt stick together to save their lives, literally. But oh well Shoutout to Willie for overcoming all odds and surviving the movie ★★★½ very good/well executed Killer: Slasher: Candyman vs. Peeping Tom vs. Stage Fright. Stage Fright comes out on top against two classics! My thoughts in the Candyman vs Tom showdown from last year still ring true, I feel like I reward movies that surprise me an punish movies that let be down, and Tom let be down while Candyman surprised me a bit and Stage Fright surprised me a lot. Peeping Tom is in third even though I still like it. Good showdown overall 2020: 18 2019: 14 2018: 13

Almost a four for me. I did not care for it. As Curtis mentioned, the early scenes, more so the family interactions are just awful. The writing is awkward, the performances are stale and the camera work/editing is so disjointing. So many quick cuts in what’s supposed to be a simple dinner scene. What is this...Bohemian Rhapsody!? The execution just felt like a carbon copy of so many better horror movies. Mandy, the Thing, The Shining, Evil Dead, Annihilation. Nothing about this stood out to me except for the two moments Curtis mentioned, but even then… it wasn’t enough to bring me back in. The story itself is really interesting and the strength of the movie. The story isn’t the problem, it’s everything else. SCORE - 4/10 (I changed my mind. Dropping it to four.) Misc - SciFi Horror: Scanners v Beyond the Black Rainbow v Color out of Space I love Sci-fi, and I hate that its one of the categories that we’ve yet to find a real winner for. Really enjoyed this. Kyle MacLachlan was great. Loved his chemistry with Beck. Not sure if it’s a horror for me, but it works as a fun sci-fi action movie. The car chase scene in the opening in hilarious. Those poor people! Was THIS close to giving a 7 but the ending threw me off. Having MacLachlan take over Beck’s dead body and resume his life with his wife and daughter feels super out of character and creepy. Would have been a lot better if he gave up his life to save Beck. I read the wiki to check and see what happened but it’s super unclear. Idk! SCORE - 6/10 [Monster - Aliens]: Attack the Block v Invasion of the Body Snatcher v The Hidden A tough batch for me! I really enjoyed all three of these. Invasion gets the 2, it’d be one of my favorites if the ending didn’t feel so withheld from what it’s trying to say. Attack the Block gets 1 and unfortunately Hidden gets 0. S3: 11 S2: 16 S1: 15

Little SHOP... Little Shop of Horrors! Watched this with Curtis last night and had a nice lil DATE. It’s a quick fun movie. Steve Martin steals every scene EASILY and the movie loses a lot of its comedic weight after he’s gone. The production design is unreal and the Audrey II puppet is so well done. We watched the alternate ending which involves a 10-minute action sequence of plants taking over the world. Not the ending I was expecting! We then watched the “real” ending which plays out pretty predictably… so it’s safe to say I much rather prefer the alternative. SCORE - 7/10 Misc - Comedy Horror: The Frighteners v Vampire’s Kiss v Little Shop of Horrors Tough to judge. Although Vampire’s Kiss is chaos Cage at his best, it really lacks in everything else. That’s the 0 for me. I don’t remember much about the Frighteners… but I remember it being fine. I’m gonna give that the 1 and give Little Shop the 2, just because I love the look of the movie and most of the performances. S3: 13 S2: 16 S1: 16

I really like what this is going for. It’s a horror story focused on online personalities, how once something is on the internet, it’s essentially out of our control. It’s there forever and can ultimate be...DEADLY! WOAH! I enjoyed the mother and daughter dynamic. It was important for Alice to reach some form of success in order to properly reveal to her mother that she’s a cam model. It gives her a more in depth motivation instead of just...I gotta be the best! I was pretty sold on the premise when things started getting out of hand… and THEN! That ending! Yikes! It just doesn’t make any sense! I still don’t even get it. She forces the online personality to give her the account password? Then she just deletes it? Then after that, the rest of the movie just sorta ends with Alice starting a new account. Incredibly rushed. I just wasn’t really sure what it wanted to say? Which is really disappointing because I think it really had something. SCORE - 5/10 Misc - Technology: Videodrome v Pulse v Cam Pulse wins for me. It’s an incredibly slow burn that doesn’t give a lot of answers but it succeeds in creating a really EERIE atmosphere with a message that’s pretty pessimistic. 2 points! Videodrome and Cam are pretty even in my eyes. The tie breaker for me though is that I think I’d appreciate Videodrome more on rewatch whereas Cam would probably stay about the same. 1 point for s1 and 0 for s3. Not looking good for s3! So this is my third Peter Strickland movie, and overall I’d say his movies are unique and more focused on adhering to a specific style without really worrying about the main story. Much like Berberian Sound Studio and (especially) In Fabric, all of his movies start out really strong, sort of wander around in the middle act and then end on a note that can feel less than satisfying. This was definitely my favorite of the three, mostly due to Sidse Babett Knudsen’s performance. The BDSM dynamic between the two characters is so bizarre. The “dom” of the relationship is essentially the one that feels trapped and abused (mentally) while the submission is the cruel, demanding, and overall selfish one. Knudsen does a great job of being so conflicted about her relationship and the final scene where she breaks down during a “performance” is the best scene in the movie for me. It’s definitely not a horror movie, but I still enjoyed it more than most of what I’ve watched. SCORE - 7/10 Misc - Horror Romance: Only Lovers Left Alive v Love Witch v The Duke of Burgundy A very competitive round! Love Witch wins by half a star, I really enjoyed the aesthetic and whimsical tone and Samantha Robinson’s performance is wonderful. 2 points for s2! I’m really torn between Lovers and the Duke. The cast in Lovers is great, but I found the story dull and a bit slow. Dukes acting is really carried by Knudsen and while the pacing is a bit all over the place, the story itself is intriguing and unique. I’m gonna give 1 point to Duke (s3) and 0 for Lovers (s1).
