It seems like the people that like contemporary music, listed a lot to spotify. Those of us who aren't as big of fans, don't.
I listen to spotify very rarely, as I only have it installed on my work laptop for use during late-night grading sessions. Most of you probably listen to it via mobile devices a lot more frequently. I'd hate to pay for your data plans!

I don't have unlimited data. Against my will, I inherited my Grandad's old iPhone 5 recently. First time I've had a 'smart' phone. I was perfectly content with my shitty brick that could only call and text people, but whatever. Apparently I need to have access to the internet at all times so now I've got my god damn iPhone like everybody else. Camera is good I guess.
People said my old phone looked like a drug dealers burner. I left it outside in the rain once and it was fine. I miss it.
Anyway, I have about 3gb of data, so I just keep the wifi off all the time. I don't want nor need this thing.

I used to go to Tower Records and listen to the new releases to sift through the shit to find the stuff i liked. The true answer to this is everyone's taste is different and it changes with your mood. Sometimes a man just wants to listen to post malone. other times he just wants to feel alongside Roberta Flack. Nobody owes anyone else anything when it comes to their taste in music.

And my answer to this is no, by and large it does not suck, and most of this comes down to subjective taste.
Personally, a lot of modern music doesn't do much for me. It takes effort to find good stuff, and I honestly cbf when I can just put on stuff I already know I like.
Also, when I do make the effort to listen to new stuff, a great deal of what I hear is very derivative, or the songwriting is seriously lacking. I'll concede that I maybe need to try harder. I mean, this is the guy who only bothered to listen to Smashing Pumpkins for the first time last year. I'm pretty lazy. But I swear, I haven't come across a single modern artist that I would rank anywhere near the likes of some of my classic favs. Not even close. (worth noting here that when I finally listened to Smashing Pumpkins, they did compare. But they aren't a modern band.)
Speaking specifically about Rock Music, I think the last time it was great was the 90s. Perhaps it's creatively exhausted itself and gone the way of Jazz, or perhaps the obsession with using click tracks, autotune and drum samples over the past 20 years has sucked the life out of it. I dunno. Given it's my fav genre, that may explain why I struggle with a lot of modern stuff. Who is the equivalent of bands like Radiohead or Muse today?
Hip Hop has usurped Rock as the most popular genre, and though I'm pretty clueless on it, I gather that most who listen to it think it is currently going through it's most creative period to date. Also, Rap has the big contemporary names that Rock seems to lack today. For example, I don't listen to rap, but I know who Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West are.
And I'm not really satisfied with this answer that you have to dig deep and search if you want to find good music. To me, that's the biggest change in modern times compared to the past. The music industry takes absolutely no chances anymore. They play it 100% safe. The industry is outdated and needs completely tearing down and replaced.
Imagine if the TV networks showed nothing but trashy reality shows all day and night, and shows like Mad Men, The Wire, and Breaking Bad were all rejected from mainstream TV, and the only place they could get screened would be on some obscure foreign network that will only put them on air at 3am, right after an hour of teleshopping. That's a bit of a strange analogy, but that is the state I think modern music is in. Modern publishing is terrible, not modern music.
I'm optimistic for the future though. The internet, despite being demonized for ruining music, is probably the best tool artists have ever been given, and it has yet to be fully realised. You can, with enough work, bypass all the industry bullshit and reach huge audiences, all while maintaining creative control. It comes with it's downsides, perhaps the biggest one being that because everyone can do it, it's easy for something good to get lost in a sea of mediocrity. But the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
The truth about the internet is that it didn't kill music. It killed the industry. And that's a good thing.

If I'd have answered this question about 5 years ago, I would have answered something like this:
Omg yes modern music sucks, I wish I was born in the 50s so I could grow up listening to I wanna hold your hand while slowly been crippled by polio and tuberculosis.

get a better cell carrier. I have unlimited data but it throttles back after 10GB and it's cheaper then what I was paying at Verizon for 4gb a month. I'm with AT&T now. |
