Not my favorite of scary movies but I thought that it held up spooky-wise? I thought the build up and writing for the entire story was kind of poor, but the acting was pretty solid for me. I enjoyed the performances of the main couple, even if the supporting characters were a little over the top. I didn't love the creatures and didn't really understand what they could actually do and it seems like they just kind of made things up along the way. I thought the twist of using the bug's venom against the dad was an interesting twist.
Overall, I thought it was okay but definitely could have used someone to come clean it up a little bit. A lot of the plot points were pretty weak but overall, I had a fun enough time that I can't be too mad. I probably won't ever watch it again. |

UHHH. I don't think I was a fan?
I like the idea of the movie and a lot of the concepts were cool. And I thought it was super visually appealing. But the writing wasn't there for me and a lot of the characters seemed to be playing up to make the twists more shocking than really play the right emotion they should have been feeling in the moment. I think I might have to go back and watch some of these scenes knowing what I know now and see if they still fit as seamlessly as they felt while watching it the first time.
I don't know. I felt like a lot of concepts were brought in when they really didn't need to be. And I really don't know how I feel about the girl forgiving the other one for chopping her whole hand off. Like, yeah, she opened her eyes but I feel like there were better ways to make that happen. Dunno. Can't say I loved the whole thing, but I loved the first part of the movie and then after that it lost me a bit. |

This was an interesting one that I think ended up falling a little too flat to call an enjoyable experience. I really appreciated that they wanted to take the haunted house concept and put a twist on it with the "solving what happened" trope, but it ended up just being a little too generic to really pull it off. I thought that a handful of the acting was alright, but I never got to see any of the emotional depth or growth in the characters through the rough writing happening.
I wish they would have taken it a step further and brought it some new scares or moments that would make this a more exciting possession movie, but I watched this movie yesterday and I've already forgotten almost all of it. Which is never a good sign. Wanted new scares, only got low budget Grave Encounters. |

Note: This is the 2017 Canadian version. Also I replaced this with something else on my list because I wanted to watch it.
I kind of loved this movie in an ironic way? Yes, it is a classic teenager slasher set-up and it was awfully written. But sometimes just how cookie cutter the story was going with the stakes SO high for no real reason was almost comedic in a way? I don't know if it was intended to be like that but I loved it. And the main girl (The one that kind of looks like Jojo) did a phenomenal job, which was a huge surprise because I never expect to really enjoy someone's performance but I think she was written well and did great with the role.
Kind of saved it! There were a few low points in the movie for me from a story standpoint but I think the raised stakes accounted for a lot of stupid mistakes that the main characters made. I also loved that the spirit in this movie had no real motivation and they didn't really have a good way to describe what it actually was. |

I'm torn with this movie. I think Carpenter is a great director, but there's something about his style that is very hot and cold for me. The Thing and Halloween are CLASSICS but I also could not get into Escape from New York and Prince of Darkness. The Fog might be the least enjoyable Carpenter movie for me to date.
This movie just drags for me. Unlike Halloween/The Thing, which are slowly paced movies with a few exciting beats sprinkled throughout, this movie just felt slow. There's really only two or three scenes where the zombies from the Fog attack, and they don't seem to do much with it. They're quick, hidden, and repetitive.
There are so many characters in this movie, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they switch around them so much that I can't really invest in any of them. It's a shame because on paper the cast is pretty good! You've got Jamie Lee Curtis acting with her mother, Janet Leigh, and the two barely share a scene together. What a waste!
I understand that the core of this movie is based on the idea of a town or society reliving the horrors of it's past, and while I think that is an interesting concept, this felt very barren and unexplored. Characters take so long to discover what's going on and by the time the movie enters its climax, I just don't really care. Nothing about this movie jumps to me, which is why it's probably going to be one of my least favorites on this list. I don't think any part of it is downright AWFUL but I'd rather a movie fuck up something completely but still do something fun/exciting ie The Perfection over a movie that kind of feels flat in all categories. Not crazy about it. |

First of all, I had pretty much seen this whole movie already. I watched it when I was young since my dad is a big Romero fan but I forgot most of it. I've seen many clips since then but it was nice to finally sit down and watch it to fill in all of the gaps
It was good! Exactly what I expected obviously, but it was a fun time. Bub was pretty great. The moment when he cocked the gun was one of my favorites, I bet that was a great wtf moment back in the day
And RHODES! What a great villain. Him, the OBNOXIOUS laughing hyena soldiers, and the mad scientist were all fun. They were all more fun than the three heroes tbh, but those three were still good. Miguel was...interesting. What a kook. Not quite sure why he didn't just lower the elevator and have them all fall in there and try to survive but HEY! Guess he wanted out
I think the kills are what really bumped it up a notch for me. Savini wilds out. I love the third act all hell breaks loose moment in zombie movies and this one was pretty great. It's always fun to finally watch people drop like flies. This has two of my favorite zombie kills I can think of. That one random soldier who gets torn to pieces and has his head ripped off by his eye sockets. That screeching sound he makes when his vocal chords are shredded, it's so good. One of my favorite kills period. And same with Rhodes, his death is classic. CHOKE ON EMMMMMMMMMM. So great. Savini went wild for this one
A fun watch overall. A little slow early on but there were some nicely tense scenes to keep things going. Wish I could compare this with Night and Dawn but tbh I'd have to rewatch those two to really judge, its been way too long
★★★½ very good/well executed
Monster - Undead: Aw man, tough break. I thought 2019 was gonna get a point here but it's up against one of the kings of the 2018 list, RE-ANIMATOR. I gotta give it to Re-Animator. They're almost similar in a way, Herbert West certainly reminds me of Doctor Frankenstein here. Both have some fun with it. But Re-Animator was too good, I love Dr. West so much. 2018 continues to pummel

It was a Dracula movie. Y'KNOW!
It was good. No complaints at all really, just didn't do a whole lot for me because that's a character and story we're all very familiar with. Tho to contradict that, I did like some of the lil twists thrown in there
For a movie from 1958 it had some decent effects here and there. Good pace too, it was a nice breezy watch
Peter Cushing was fun to watch. Lee fit the role of Dracula really well, I just wish he had a bit more to do. A few good bits of humor and I liked the Arthur character as it went on. Good watch overall
★★★ good/interesting concept/would recommend
Monster - Classic: Last year's classic monster was ALSO a standard vampire story, Vampyr. One of my least favorite movies from the last batch. Dracula did everything better with the help of ~20 years of technology. Dracula/2019 gets the point EZ

I'm making a prediction. Curtis is NOT gonna like this movie.
The horror elements to this are very faint. It's more like a giant mixture of different genres blended with the backdrop you'd see in horror. I thought this movie was really entertaining. The movie satires relationships and love, or more specifically, how women are view and critiqued on their behaviors towards men. The movie has a lot of fun switching roles just to show you how completely ridiculous we act when dealing with love.
Samantha Robinson is perfect in this. She adds just the right amount campiness to her performance which plays really well to the overall 70's aesthetic that the movie is aiming for.
There's a lot to dissect in this movie and the pacing can be a bit dragging at times but if you're into 70's camp sarcasm, it might not bother you as much.
Also, shout out to Anna Biller, who not only directed the movie, but wrote, produced, edited, designed, and composed it as well. Jesus.

I was not crazy about Only Lover's Left Alive last year. I thought it was shot well and had some great performances, but the overall theme fell a little flat to me. I think Love Witch is a better encompass of the horror-romance genre and would be a movie I could see myself coming back to. POINT FOR SEASON TWO!

I just got back from watching this and I am so very pleasantly surprised. It's not going to set the world on fire or anything, but it was a really fun movie for what it was. And believe it or not, after about thirty minutes spent with the new Chucky I kind of forgot about how fucking ugly he is. A majority of the comedic bits hit hard for me ("This is for Tupac", basically everything involving the present) and honestly, as soon as it showed the kids watching and laughing at Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 while Chucky watches them and gets the idea that violence makes them happy I knew I was all in with it. Big fan of the decision to very slowly ease into the Chucky voice, having it corrupt the standard voice.
I marked out a little for the stupid teddy bear version of Chucky in the big showdown scene too. |

I watched the Bela Lugosi Dracula not too long ago, so it was fun to compare the two since the stories are so similar. I liked that in this version, Dracula's castle looked more like a regal/gothic mansion instead of an abandoned fortress that screamed "hey i'm an evil monster". I also really enjoyed Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. I loved the effects of Dracula's death with the sunlight. It's a lot more climatic than the 1932 version.
However overall the movie felt a little flat to me. I was surprised how little Christopher Lee was in this. I felt like we never really go to know him as Dracula. He felt more like a plot device than an actual presence of evil. Although I wasn't a fan of the 1931 Dracula compared to the other old Universal movies, I still thought Bela Legosi was amazingly threatening. There are so great moments of dialogue with Legosi and Helsing and I was surprised that we never got that in this movie.
I also really enjoyed the Renfield character in the original. It was great to essentially have an antagonist working within the mansion while everyone else was so focused on Dracula. This version had nothing like that, just the housemaid being really DUMB about opening the windows. I thought the overall look was great, but this just felt a little empty to me.

I was so sad when he didn't do the "This is for Tupac" line for that one kid and I almost lost my mind when he brought it back later. It was so good. |

I'm trying to finish my list. What would you guys categorize Wicker Man as? I'm going from top to bottom. Adding Funny Games back as my Home Invasion because after watching the trailer I think I've only seen the newest one multiple times. I'm wondering if Wicker Man would fit for fanatacism? | |

I laughed out loud and probably startled the whole two other people who were in the theater with me. People better not sleep on this one! It's dumb fun. When the black kid adopted Chucky and started calling him Chode... it was so stupid but I loved it because that's exactly what would happen with those toys IRL. |

Oh and the arterial blood spray from the mascot onto the little girl to kick off the carnage in the finale was hilarious. The comedy in this reboot reminded me of Slither for some reason. |
