We recently moved to the big city and now have about 5000 neighbors. There was even a mini traffic jam in front of our house when the football team returned from winning their 7th state championship. It's the first time I've lived closer than 20 highway miles from a full sized grocery store in about 15 years. |
My "small town" I grew up in had 30,000. It was seven miles from 150,000 and 45 miles from SF.
|
I grew up in Greensburg KS. Pratt was the closest bigger town at 30 miles and it had about 10,000 people. Dodge city was about 50 miles and had about 45,000 people.
Wichita was a little over 100 miles and it had about 400K.
Back then, the big chains hadn't killed all of the small town businesses though and the little towns all had local groceries, department stores, clothing stores, hardware stores, etc...
Most of the really small towns now have none of that. Maybe a cafe or two and a Dollar Store. |
I've driven through those towns! That really is the middle of nowhere in the heart of cattle/wheat country.

With modern transportation, there's no reason for people to be all crammed together like that. |
It's tough to find good sushi in the middle of nowhere.
|
True, but it sure is easy to find a good steak around here:) |
Not if you have to travel 15 miles to the store. ;)
Where I'm at, it seems like I'm in the suburbs in the middle of nowhere, but I can walk to sushi, steaks, pretty much whatever I want except cool gaming and comic stores (those both closed down).

I've never tried gas station sushi. |
I'm guessing nobody ever should.

You are generally lucky if you get me to eat anything from a gas station that isn't prepackaged.

Casey's General Store pizza isn't terrible, for midwestern (i.e. middle of nowhere) pizza. I've also been known to partake in the occasional gas station hotdog sandwich or two.

I typically won't eat anything made in those outside of a doughnut (and pretty sure those are made elsewhere and brought there). Who wants a hot dog sandwich where the dog has been on rollers all day. We call people who spent too much time at the tanning salon "7-11 hotdogs". Wawa and Sheetz usually have a sandwich place that's a step up from Subway, but that's not saying much.
We made fun of the 7-11 Doritos Loaded things that were being advertised- we called them "pants loaded" because that was what would happen if you ate them. | How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat? |

When something has to be described as "isn't terrible", that's not usually a selling point.

7-11 now has ovens where they cook pizzas, wings, and they make spicy chicken sandwiches that are really good. |

I go in the 7-11 all the time, I've seen the pizza and wings and chicken sandwiches. They are just cooking up frozen shit a step up from microwaving it. It's how they also cooked the Doritos Pants Loaded.

Buckees is pretty great.
Also NYC sucks
Also being a semi-regular in NJ. The full service is pretty strange. I always make Nicole pump gas when she comes visits me in case the unthinkable happens there too. | "So, uh, what are we saying here? If we save LA from a nuclear bomb, then you and I can get together for dinner and a movie?"
