It doesn't mean they need to be educated

um... that's exactly what it means.

But forcing your version of "educating" them isn't needed. If people want to learn, then they can learn. But they don't need it forced on them. Many religions suffer the exact same problem and is why so many people have a pretty passionate dislike for them.

No it doesn't. Just because you think it's something that should be universally accepted and applauded doesn't mean it should be and will be. Get off your soap box.

if someone refuses to accept something is their problem. Refusing to learn about something is ignorance and they should be taught and then make their decision.

Carla Wood Alcorn continues to misgender her daughter in interviews and its disgusting to do so and later say how much she loved her.

Playing devil's advocate maybe her family loved her and what they are doing they thought was right but hell I'm no religious fanatic just a skeptic, there is probably more to this matter.

What they thought was right was ruining their daughters life. You'd think that with taking Leelah to therapy and seeing how depressed she was they would think, "Hey, this is make our child happy, we should listen to what she has to say."

Leelah never spoke to her mother about being transgendered after coming out for the first time. She hated her parents for what they did to her.

Or they probably went "You are just being childish, stop that." Not defending these assholes, but I think this suicide thing is retarded, If I was her, I would just deal with it until I'm 18, move out, disown my family and do whatever the fuck I wish with my gender. I think the parents are just being overdemonized, that's all. Sure what they did was stupid but like the religious nuts they are, they didn't hire a real therapist or thought transgender people were the spawn of Satan, hell the kid probably could be a selfish prick desperate for attention.

The thing is that they cut her off from friends and took away her circle of friends and support. She had no one to talk to, no one to help her. She saw no future for herself because her parents did everything to limit leelahs contact with anyone. She had no way out of that situation.

It's not like they locked her in their dungeon basement and threw away the key.

Popular doesn't mean that it is true.

You seem to be underestimating the weight of a parents decisions regarding their child.

Taking someone out of school is pretty damn far from locking them in a dungeon.

This is Leelah's note that she queued to post on tumblr. She explains what her parents did and how she couldn't live the life she wanted.

I'm not gonna point fingers and and call anyone bigoted, but what Leelah's parents did was awful and it left her so alone and depressed that she felt there wasn't a way out. If her parents had accepted her for who she was, this wouldn't have happened.

still might have happened. they seemed really depressed about being in their own body, even saying that if they transitioned they would be a lonely woman. Because if the problem was solely the parents, why not run away? probably has a lot to do with believing that the clock was running out on the transition process
