I liked it! Loved the idea to combine an 80's action movie with body snatchers
The opening had me fairly hooked. And I like Chris Mulkey so that was fun. Love those classic 80's car stunts. That one guy getting run down looked BRUTAL! I saw some reviews describe it as an alien that just wants to go 5 star mode in GTA and thats spot on
Kyle MacLachlan is always so great. He had major Agent Cooper vibes here. His relationship with the main cop kinda reminded me of early him and Truman a lil bit!
Loved the budding friendship between those two. I thought the main cop was gonna be a total dick early on but he was great, I was rooting for him
Part of me wishes they didnt broadcast the MacLachlan twist so clearly...but part of me is glad it didnt come out of the blue at the end, that couldve been bad if not handled right
Fun stuff throughout, always entertaining. A high 6 for me
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Monster - Aliens: Attack the Block vs. Invasion of the Body Snatchers vs. The Hidden. All 6's! I wasnt nearly as high on Attack the Block as I was on the other two. Maybe these should both be 7's, who knows! Attack is in third and I think I'm gonna give first to The Hidden. If it was against the Body Snatchers remake I would give it to Body Snatchers but this is a step above the original Snatchers for me. Snatchers just had that terrible ending which was a bummer. I remember it still held up really well tho overall
2020 pulls ahead surprisingly!

I thought this was surprisingly fun. I thought I was in for a BAAAAAAAAD time once I saw the ridiculous intro. I was expecting another Critters but thankfully I quickly forgot about that nonsense and the tone of the movie became more clear
It was a campy fun time, nearly a parody really. And it had some surprising DEPTH! The best friend character dying was sad, and the way they did it with the recording he left and reveal of his body right after, that was good. I loved the argument scene early on between the two of them, that sorta scene is rare for a movie like this. Or at least the fact that it was GOOD is rare
I loved Tom Atkins' character too. The tagline delivery about the dates being dead was perfect, I loved that moment. I liked the side story with him tracking down the murderer and the murderer later rising up from the dead, that was fun and didnt feel entirely unnecessary
GOOD STUFF
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Monster - Virus: Afflicted vs. The Battery vs. Night of the Creeps. Battery is last but it was a fine movie. Afflicted vs Creeps is TOUGHHHH. I'm gonna give a very slight edge to Afflicted
Edit: CHANGE OF HEART. Creeps over Afflicted

eh! You know, just another old as dirt early horror movie from the 40's. Never my favorite
I dont think it aged particularly well. Every story is something Ive seen before (except for the golf story, mercifully), and Ive mostly seen the stories done better really
I thought the overarching story was the most interesting bit, especially the ending, that was kinda fun
1. Puppet
2. Mirror
3. Hospital
4. Christmas
5. Golf
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Misc: Anthology: Ghost Stories vs. Creepshow vs. Dead of Night. Creepshow takes the top spot easilyyyyyyyy. Didnt love either Ghost Stories or this but second will go to....Ghost Stories I guess. Dead of Night was nearly a 4 for me but I gave it a slight break for being the first of its kind. Ghost Stories was a letdown but the thrillz and chillz in some bits will stick with me more than anything from this, I'll forget about this tomorrow

Top 10 weirdest movie intros of all time. This movie has a lot of fun and the characters really sell the campy tone. The best friend’s death was unexpected and really emotional. All and all, this feels like a great love letter to 50’s horror. It didn’t personally stand out enough for me to enjoy it as much as others, but it’s movies like these that really laid the groundwork for Stranger Things. Also, I enjoyed the quick Dick Miller “Walter” cameo. Bucket of Blood is great! I originally had it at a 5 but bumped it to a 6 due to my own personal opinion and absolutely zero outside influence.
SCORE - 6/10
Monster - Virusl: Afflicted v The Battery v Night of the Creeps
Pretty easy decision for me. Afflicted was such a nice surprise and enjoyable watch, it’s just a shame it’s not a virus movie, haha. 2 points for S1. The Battery is fine, but doesn’t have the charm or personality to compete with Night of the Creeps. 1 point for S3 and 0 for S2.

It’s an anthology movie from the ’40s. They’re not all gonna be winners! I really enjoyed this event though most of it feels pretty dated. It’s really cool to watch movies that were such huge influences on future horror. I can still find charm in a moment that at the time was considered scary but nowadays plays for comical or corny.
The framing device story works great. I love how interactive it is with the shorts and I love the ending sequence where the man’s running through all the different elements from the various stories. I wish other anthologies utilized the framing story more.
The Dummy story is the best. Love the ending in the hospital and the build-up of tension between the two. The golf story is the worst. I think they wanted to have a story with some comic levity but it just doesn’t age well compared to the other four. Oh well!
SCORE - 6/10
Misc. - Anthology: Ghost Stories v Creepshow v Dead of Night
Ghost Stories had some pretty SOLID scares early on but really lost steam and dragged on. 0 points for S1. Creepshow is a fun time with more hits than misses, but ultimately I enjoyed the overall framing of Dead of Night and most of its stories/sequences. While Creepshow may be more consistent, Dead of Night has my favorite story out of them all and a much more entertaining finish. So there ya go. 2 points for S3 and 1 for S2.

I have FIIIIIIINALLY seen the original The Thing. At long last. Carpenter's version is my favorite horror movie so I've been meaning to watch this for ages
It ofc doesn't hold a candle to THEEEEE Thing, but I enjoyed it! Stark contrast to Dead of Night for me, this was an oldie that actually held up and stood the test of time to a certain degree
After I watched this I read Who Goes There which inspired both this and Carpenter's. Before I read it I though Carpenter made a bunch of improvements over Another World, but he actually stayed way closer to Who Goes There while it was Another World that made a bunch of changes from Who Goes There. Im not sure WHY they took the source material and decided to lose the great imitation angle and replaced it with a big tall goofy looking man, but hey! It definitely still had shades of The Thing throughout it. The debate between destroying it and studying it was straight out of Who Goes There and was pretty interesting, I like that two factions started to form in this. The scientist guy was a dork but brought up good points from time to time. Both sides raised good points which made it better
Both this and Who Goes There have a shit load of characters, its really weird. Carpenter made the great choice of slimming them way down and having them die one by one. The other two are not like that at all. Another World had a handful of characters that I was able to start telling apart from one another but they just had so much fodder mixed within them, not sure why
A fun quick time overall, glad I finally watched it

Monster - Neo Monster: Splinter vs. Black Lagoon vs. The Thing from Another World. Last place is Splinter, which was still alright. Lagoon and Thing...two classics that held up, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Black Lagoon. That wins it for me

Five more done just like that. Ten total. CRUISING! Ive been bad with movies this year so Im trying to get a head start here while I have the motivation, thinking I might take a break now for a bit though
But for now its RANK TIME
|
1. Night of the Creeps
2. The Hidden
3. Night of the Living Dead
4.The Thing From Another World
5. The Borderlands
6. Phase IV
7. The Burning
8. Dead of Night
9. American Mary
10. Cam
Somewhat surprisingly to myself, I'm giving the top spot to Night of the Creeps. Still looking for a movie here that I really enjoyed a lot, but Creeps and The Hidden come the closest with Living Dead right behind. Congrats to American Mary which surrenders the bottom spot to CAM! |

Got to watch this with Curtis and had a good OLE time. His post covers most of what I want to say, although I will mention that I haven’t had a chance to read Who Goes There yet. I guess the strong variations from the source material where budgetary? I can’t think of any reason why. It’s got the charm of an old school horror movie. The idea of a division between camps is interesting but isn’t explored too much. There’s just way too many characters and a romance that feels so out of place with the rest of the movie. The sequences with the monster are fun, it’s like that old Halo mode “Juggernaut” where someone is insanely overpowered and everyone else just has to unload on him in order to stop him. There’s a great fire sequence that’s super impressive given the time it was made. All in all, an okay watch that I’m happy I can cross off my list.
SCORE - 5/10
Monster - Neo Monster: Splinter v Black Lagoon v The Thing from Another World
Easy 0 for S1 Splinter here. Black Lagoon had a lot of charm to it and some of the funniest close-ups I’ve seen of the monster. GULP GULP. 2 points for S2 and 1 point for S3.

BRINGING BACK MY LIST FROM LAST YEAR TO ACTUALLY FINISH IT BOOYAH
Somewhere in the world it must be Friday the 13th!
|
I like being annoyingly independent and hate large scales, so here’s how I’m scoring:
1 - Don’t open the goddamn door
2 - Congratulations, you found an axe
3 - Making a pyramid of zombie heads
4 - Destroying the world with a flamethrower

Category: Killer - Backwoods & Redneck
Score: 2 - Congratulations, you found an axe
Meh. I think my expectations might've been too high after I loved Nightmare on Elm Street so much, but this one fell flat. I couldn't remember who half the characters were, a bunch of parts were too dark to really see, and the pacing of kills seemed super fast the first half of the movie, leaving the second half to feel slow. Highlight was the scene of Alice freaking out and trying to block the door in the cabin when she's the only one left alive and one of the guys describing himself as "dumb as they come" to the police.
Didn't leave my excited to watch any of the sequels. Freddie >>> Jason

Wow. This felt way ahead of its time. This movie does so much to develop its atmosphere, which IMO is the best way to do horror. From the creepy kids, to the weird sounds Miss Giddens hears when wandering through the house, you just feel really on edge the entire time, or at least I did. There’s also a crazy pop-up about 2/3s in that really got a nice little YELP out of me. I had no idea how it would end, and with only five minutes left, I was worried it’d feel super rushed but it didn’t. I love the ending.
I’ve been listening to the opening song all week. Much like the rest of the movie, it just sticks with me. I watched the first half just in my living room, then watched the rest with headphones in my room. JINKIES! But yea, I loved it. The main performances are all wonderful and I thought the maid was hilarious in the way she’d just agree with Miss Giddens, not sure how else to react to her bizarre accusations. Like oh okay, you think the kids are possessed? Wtf are we supposed to do?
It’s still really early, but I think I found my Martyrs/Midsommar. I just don’t see anything else on the list resonating with me as much as this did. I guess we’ll see!
SCORE - 9/10
Paranormal - Ghost & Spirits: Ringu v Tigers Are Not Afraid v The Innocents
I didn’t hate any of these, which makes this a pretty important round, point wise. Innocents will get the 2 points. I’m gonna give Ringu the edge over Tigers, although it’s really slow and a bit too ambiguous for me, it still left more of an impact than Tigers, which was good but not as great as I hoped it would be.

Gotta say, I was pretty disappointed by this. Like Curtis mentioned, there’s a lot of hype over the ending, and I just don’t see it. The idea of the two leads getting digested in the belly of an ancient god or whatever sounds really unique on paper, but the entire ending felt so rushed. So much of the main storyline is thrown at us in the last 15 minutes that it’s impossible to digest it. HA!
I couldn’t stand Gray. His character felt so distracting to the creepy atmosphere the church had set up. I also thought it was really weird that out of everyone else, the non-believer was the one that thought what was going on was real. There’s some really spooky moments with the audio recordings that I enjoyed, but I just couldn’t buy into anything else this had to offer.
SCORE - 4/10
Misc - Found Footage: Hell House LLC v As Above, So Below v The Borderlands
What a trio! As disappointing as the Borderlands ending was, it’s nowhere near as bad as the ending of Hell House LLC. That being said, the location for Hell House is fun, and there’s a few really creepy moments that got me. As Above, So Below was definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. There’s a scene where a character is stuck in a small space and it’s nauseatingly claustrophobic. As Above gets the 2, Hell House 1, Borderlands 0.

Creepy kiddies! The kills in this movie are weird, they’re like right on line between brutal and awkward, I can’t really decide. That being said, I thought the teacher’s death was gnarly, especially with the build up and seeing the kid’s reactions. Talk about a bad day at school! I think once you realize what’s going on, the story really picks up. I love the final act in the attic where the doctor has to rescue the kid, hoping Frank can keep his wife calm. He doesn’t. I enjoyed this a lot more than Videodrome and Scanners, but I still think the Fly is Cronenberg’s best.
Reading the backstory on this is crazy. Apparently Cronenberg wrote this while dealing with an ugly divorce and custody battle over his kid. This is like when an famous musician writes a song over their ex, except in this case, Cronenberg is framing his wife to look like a lunatic giving birth to an army of little monsters.
SCORE - 7/10
Misc - Creepy Kid: We Need to Talk about Kevin v Pet Sematary v The Brood
We Need to Talk about Kevin was my second favorite movie of S1, so it wins the 2 points. Pet Sematary lost more and more stock with me as time went by. It’s a solid story, but drags for so long and the acting is pretty unmemorable. Brood gets 1 point and Pet gets 0.

I love when horror is used as a metaphor for dealing with some sort of issue, whether it’s racism, trauma, or in this case, dealing with the inevitable death of a loved one. While some parts of the final “chase” were a bit goofy for me, I still really enjoyed where it took the story and the overall ending. Loved the sequence in the halls where the walls got smaller and smaller. Also lots of nice subtle performances that never felt forced or too over the top.

Relic [Paranormal - Haunted House]: House on Haunted Hill v The Haunting v Relic
The Haunting was one of my favorites last year and easily gets the 2 points for me. I’ve grown more fond of House on Haunted Hill over the years but am still slightly disappointed at what felt like a waste of a really strong premise. It’s close but because I think the Relic at a more original and consistent execution, I’m going to give it the 1 point and Haunted Hill the 0. Sorry Mr. Price.

If anyone deserves a shot at remaking NotLD, it’s Savini. That being said, I found this to be extremely underwhelming. It’s never a good sign to constantly be thinking about the original while viewing a remake. I just don’t think this added anything efficient enough to justify a remake. Tony Todd gives an okay performance, but his character feels so over the top and pales next to Duane Jones, who’s calm yet commanding presence paints the perfect picture for what made the original so timeless. I do like that they added more of an arc to Barbara but I couldn’t help but think it was at Ben’s expense. The ending is fine but severely lacks the same punch of the original. I’m all more a remake doing it’s own thing, but this felt stuck between doing something different and giving us more of the same.

[Monster - Undead]: Reanimator v Day of the Dead v Night of the Living Dead (remake)
This is a pretty straightforward ranking for me. Love Reanimator. 2 points. Day of the Dead is messy but has some great gags in it. 1 point. NotLD gets left with the 0.

While I love the different approach of this movie, especially the opening, I gotta say… it was so painfully slow. It’s a long 86 minutes. The extremely close ups of the ants were really cool and I loved the overall sound design, but plotwise it’s insanely difficult to figure out what’s going on, and the ending feels like they ran out of money and quickly pieced together something that would work. There was so much build up with the scientist’s bitten hand. I was WAITING for a scene where ants bursted out of it. But nope! Nothing. Just… nothing.

[Monster - Animals & Nature]: Cujo v The Fog v Phase IV
I’ve got two 5s and one 4, this is clearly not my favorite category. 0 points goes to the Fog, I understand that it’s a cult classic to some but for me I felt extremely underwhelmed and unengaged with the story and characters. 1 point goes to Phase IV for being solid sci-fi movie but a pretty hollow horror. And unbelievably the 2 points will go to CUJO! WOOF!
