I also look at it this way. The Nazis, the Muslim hordes, the Christian inquisitors, and nearly every other conquering party through history have destroyed every symbol of the dissenting view they could get their hands on. They did so to inspire fear and control the populace. Is that the goal of the destruction? If so, maybe we should find a better way than the one that has been used since the advent of tribalism.

The one exception I can think of offhand being the Vikings who conquered on a small scale and chameleoned right in on the large scale.

I don't know why you had to preface with the fact you're "not calling me out" but okay... I assume we're just having a discussion so I don't know why I would take it that way? Anyway, I'm fine with pieces of the Berlin wall and Nazi memorabilia. If there's anything we should remember (and there is a lot), it should certainly be Nazi Germany I would be fine with pieces of the confederate monuments, pictures, and actually I don't care if someone wants to haul the whole lot into museums, whatever. I have no desire to visit them or preserve them but if other people want that, then fine. As long as they're not standing in place as the symbols of hate they currently are.

I suppose it can be argued that sometimes destruction of monuments is entirely justified.

I'm thinking of former communist countries destroying statues of Lenin, or Germany getting rid of statues of Hitler following WW2. Oh, and Iraqis tearing down that big ass statue of Saddam.

So maybe the exception is when there are people who are still directly affected by whatever bad thing said monuments are related to.

In which case, I can maybe see Maddies point about being a black man in Georgia etc

I can undeerstand reactive destruction, but it's still motivated by fear/hate. Maybe the cathartic benefits to that subsector could outweigh the negatives, though. It's definitely worth thinking about.
