I grew up on a lake in Michigan. I absolutely loved it. I need space and openness. Can't get that in the city. |

It's not about the space, it's about the fun and excitement!

The lack of space trumps that for me.
I grew up in Western KS where you can literally see for miles in every direction. I need sky and nature and space.
I understand a lot of people feel differently, and I'm glad they do.

Fishing and swimming in the lake is fun and exciting. Honking of taxis and seeing thousands of people walking the streets with high rises everywhere is not fun and exciting. Not my atmosphere and I don't feel comfortable there. Having to keep checking my pants to make sure my wallet hasn't been stolen isn't "fun". |

You and I should be neighbors, and by neighbors I mean our houses should sit next to each other by about 5 miles apart. |

New York is not as dangerous as it used to be but that's fine. I've been there 3 times (the last time was about 9 years ago), but there were cops all over the place, at least in the more crowded, touristy places. Anyway, I loved it and I'd live there part time if I could afford it. There's always something to do, whether it's plays, great restaurants, shopping, etc. There's also so much diversity, which I like, and so much history there.
I'm not from a really big city - Portland is pretty laid back and much smaller than New York, LA, etc - and I was raised in the suburbs, but if I had to live out in the country where you had to drive miles to just go shopping, etc, I'd go crazy. I like being close to "the city" and having lots of options.

With modern transportation, there's no reason for people to be all crammed together like that. |
It's tough to find good sushi in the middle of nowhere.

We recently moved to the big city and now have about 5000 neighbors. There was even a mini traffic jam in front of our house when the football team returned from winning their 7th state championship. It's the first time I've lived closer than 20 highway miles from a full sized grocery store in about 15 years.

My "small town" I grew up in had 30,000. It was seven miles from 150,000 and 45 miles from SF.

I grew up in Greensburg KS. Pratt was the closest bigger town at 30 miles and it had about 10,000 people. Dodge city was about 50 miles and had about 45,000 people.
Wichita was a little over 100 miles and it had about 400K.
Back then, the big chains hadn't killed all of the small town businesses though and the little towns all had local groceries, department stores, clothing stores, hardware stores, etc...
Most of the really small towns now have none of that. Maybe a cafe or two and a Dollar Store.

When I was in 6th grade, we moved to Pittsburg KS. Pittsburg has about 20,000 people, and my 6th grade self was definitely picturing the TV version of NY city because I hadn't seen that many people, cumulatively, in my life.
