I think if it were other showrunners I'd be more optimistic, these guys added rape to make GOT darker. I don't think they're capable of the sensitivity this needs. |
When?
There's so much rape in ASOIAF. |
Don't pretend they didn't add shit. |
If you're talking about the Cersei/Jamie scene it wasn't added by the writers, the director didn't mean to make it seem non-consensual nor did the actors.

Also Merc are you saying that a slave in Bangladesh should write a script about the American Confederacy? lol that's how I interpreted your post. |
No I was trying to point out how stupid it is to think that it's not "chill" for a white person to write about slavery because they might have ancestors who died a 100 years ago who were slavers.
Why does the fact that they are white matter? There are a lot of black people who have the same ancestors? There are people who immigrated to the US that have/had slaves? |
First of all, why are you calling me stupid?
Secondly, black people in America are still very much still experiencing the after effects of slavery and are not treated entirely like first class citizens. I don't see a show written by white men or from ancestors of slavers to be writing this dystopia. Tbh I wouldn't expect you to fully understand this not growing up here or learning about Reconstruction and all of that growing up in school, but it's just not chill in a society that has not moved on from slavery yet. We don't need to give another voice to the white man like this.
The fact that they are white matters a lot. If there was a black co-writer, and not these GoT dudes, I'd maybe look at this a bit differently, but it's still a really terrible idea. |
I'm not saying you're stupid, I'm saying you wrote something stupid, there's a huge difference.
Wise people rarely say stupid stuff, smart people do all the time.
America needs to move on and this line of thinking is the opposite, despite what your teachers told you to think. |
Merc, we are not in a post-racial society. And within that context, slavery is still relevant to the black experience. Racism is still very much alive so YES, people are concerned about it being treated sensitively and not as entertainment.
We're not trying to move past it because racism is still a big part of their truth and until they are ACTUALLY treated equal it's going to continue being an issue. | nav is ugly and i am pretty |

"My teachers" come from a million different backgrounds and perspectives and didn't "tell me how to think." They taught me how to think for myself. I resent everything implied in this post, especially the fact that you clearly don't think I have the ability to think for myself, but I really don't see the point in trying to explain my thoughts at this point. I'm just going to leave it at this.

It's a very sensitive issue here, I agree, and you're right that if handled poorly this show could be a huge disaster.

I still think that saying stuff like that white people can't write a show like that just adds fuel to the flames.

I'm interested to see how these two guys run a show that doesn't have it's climatic moments already written down for them. :)

I decided to click on the opening link after reading this thread ... it seems like the kind of show HBO would produce to get people to tune in.
Isn't it just that, a rating grab, or is it really a big social issue as depicted in this thread?
