With the remainder of my Steam gift card from my birthday, I'm having trouble deciding between this and Kentucky Route Zero. Any recommendations? |

Bought and... finished.
|
I already knew the game was short which is why I held off buying it for so long. Still... I wish there was something more. Especially since we covered 79 days out in the wilderness. I agree with earlier statements about the early days. The climax seemed really rushed.
Really enjoyed it, regardless. I forgot I had the camera and only took one picture the entire game, so I was kicking myself when the credits rolled. |

Finally started. Might try to play one day at a time since it's so short? Maybe one day every IRL day? I have no idea how many days there are tho. Do you guys recommend spreading it out a bit or just plowing through it?

Visuals are really great. OLLY MOSS MUH BOY! The opening story was pretty sad, RIP Mayhem. Mayhem over Bucket all day. I dunno how twisty the story gets, but I feel like Henry's wife's dementia could come into play maybe. Like maybe it's actually Henry with dementia or something. Maybe the lady on the walkie talkie isn't real. I DUNNO! There's not much hint to the story yet other than the place getting ransacked at the end of the first day, so I have no idea where things are going which I'm really glad about
Voice acting is great, I love that we're Harry Crane. Exploration is fun enough but I'm not sure how much I should've been exploring at the start there. I didn't wanna go too far off the trail because I figured I'd be back in those areas at some point but I'm not sure
GG SO FAR |

Just plow through, or maybe take a break after BIG MOMENTS. The days are pretty unevenly paced. Some breaks might help though. | d ( i n o s r o a ) r

I finished this today.

Kind of underwhelming. I understand in real life not everything can be super twisty and complicated but for 20 bucks I feel like it can.
Also how did Ned get the fence and stuff around the Wabati Camp and all the fancy equipment. That part just didn't make sense.
Really cool idea and visuals, but the story was lacking... Pretty disappointed Deliah BAILED on us. |

Ned just moved into an offseason research station. They were tracking elk. Delilah doesn't pay attention and forgot it was supposed to be there. Then she and Henry fed into each others paranoia about it without reconsidering. There was SOMETHING going on (Ned's eavesdropping and surveling and eventual arson) but it was never as big as their own imaginations made it out to be, but they were too caught up in the conspiracy theories to question it.
I think it would have helped the game if the start days were longer and you got more into the paranoia and bonding with Delilah.

The second day ended as I wanted to stop anyway. Might do a few together next time I play
Getting increasingly curious about what's happening. The fenced in area, the missing ranger's pack, PTSD Ned who seems important, the girls and their destroyed tent, and especially Delilah's side convo that she forgot to turn off her walkie for. I DON'T TRUST DELILAH. I also feel like the convenient trail of beer cans was staged, either that or it's just the game going way too easy on players to lead them around. Henry kept mentioning that they had way too many beers for just the two of them tho so I think it was planted. But I rly have no idea if the story is going in that direction. Maybe Henry is actually a nut and really did attack the camp |

Oh the days uh...really do jump ahead. I thought it took place over just like 7 days or something
I think I really liked it??? I definitely had a lot of fun playing, and I knew the story/ending/lack of payoff was the most critiqued part of the game so I was able to manage my expectations a lot which tbh probably made it a whole lot more enjoyable for me
The entire game/story almost feels like an inside joke. The amount of theorizing I did was RIDICULOUS! I thought Delilah was getting on the helicopter without me and was gonna tell them that she was the last one so that I'd stay behind and die because she needed to tie up that loose end since I knew her secret about Brandon. I thought Delilah was drawing me that one day because she was sketching a missing persons poster like that other one and was gonna make sure I got trapped down in the cave or something. I thought Delilah wasn't real. I thought my wife wasn't real. I thought Henry actually was crazy and was behind everything. I THOUGHT A LOT OF THINGS
But that definitely seemed like the point, and maybe my stupid mind wandering all the time (along with Henry's) was more satisfying than any actual explanation they could've given for everything. I really liked that we were just paranoid all along, both the player and Henry, AND Delilah who I was surprised to discover was in on absolutely nothing (wait but who was she talking to on that other line!!)
It was an original way of doing things at least, I kinda dug it. Loved the touch with the pictures at the end, that played out PERFECTLY for me and showed my paranoid in reverse. I started by taking really nice pictures of the scenery. Then I got paranoid and used it to take pictures of evidence, mysterious things, the body, etc. Then the final picture after Brandon's body was a pic of the Pork Pond sign that it turns out Delilah herself had stolen, which was a perfect final picture to come after all my paranoid ones because it showed that things were never as serious as I was making them out to be. PRETTY COOL
Apart of me really wishes there was a perfectly brilliant twist that involves me being some sorta Desmond/Dharma employee character who is being watched by the people who hired me, but the other part of me is surprisingly satisfied with the way they took it
Pretty great/original game overall. Will never play again (: |

Just finished Firewatch today! I waited until a Steam sale to buy it because I heard the short length wasn't really worth the $20. After playing, I think the beautiful graphics made it worth the cost, even if the game was quite short. I love hiking IRL so it was fun to be able to do it in a game--I thought all the details were really nice as well. Normally I get frustrated when I get lost or stuck in a game, but in this one I didn't really mind wandering around the park a bit because everything was just so pleasant.
I haven't really decided what my thoughts on the overall narrative were and what I thought about the end, but I don't think I'm as annoyed with it as some people might have been.

Got it on my Christmas Steam shopping spree, finished it in 3 hours, $12 for 3 hours is not too bad for entertainment, $20 would have been too much though for it.

Thots
The bad:
- I didn't like the controls, felt a bit clunky and not being able to jump in a game like this was felt terrible.
- Repetitive animations, kinda ties into the controls.
Losing control to see the same animation for climbing a small rock, dropping down a small rock, dropping down a ledge, etc. again and again was awful.
- Walking to point A to point B to point C got old really quickly, it really lacked more gameplay like small puzzles or anything.
The good:
- Graphics, even on low on my laptop it looked good, I really liked the art style, kinda wished I had played it on my desktop PC.
- The story, I actually liked the ending, it really fit with the story of this middle aged guy having a crisis, a lot of paranoia when everything was quite normal and reasonable.
How abruptly it ended was meh though, I wish it had ended like it started, instead of just rolling credits.
Overall 4.5/10, would have been 6-7 if it had more gameplay.
Sad that I never found the turtle :(

For some reason I actually really liked not having as much control in this game...I don't know how to articulate. I just really enjoyed the simplicity of it all. It was pretty refreshing. | "All this from a slice of gabagool?" |

Oxenfree thread is locked and the last video game you played thread just won't do so I'll post about Life is Strange in the Firewatch thread instead of the Life is Strange thread | |
