If every 16 year old got everything they wanted the world would be a terrible terrible place, the reason you are still a minor when you're 16 is because you're too fucking young to decide to make HUGE life altering decisions.

I think Natalie has teenager/s right? I know Buffy raised a couple at some point and time. What would happen if you let your kids do whatever the fuck they wanted to at 16?

Parents make mistakes but they were probably trying their best. To say they deserve no sympathy, though.. I don't know what was going through any of their heads but don't judge them until you have been in their situation.

from leelah herself, sure sounds like child abuse to me.

But they were close minded Christian bigots. And yes, it was abuse. Her parents did everything they could from letting Leelah be herself and tried to make them who he parents wanted them to be. Leelah felt trapped in her own body and knew she was different since she was young. Her age should not invalidate her feelings because she wasn't legal. I knew since I was 13 that I wasn't straight. Is my sexuality invalidated because I was so young? I knew what I felt and Leelah knew what she felt. It was her life that her parents tried to control and make her feel that she wasn't a human being.

These people lost a child, yet they still treat her with disrespect. The fact is, that if they really loved their child, they would have done what was best for her and given her the support she needed.

Pardon my hyperbole. I don't think any suggestions to remove the discussion were a "joke" though.

You'd think that with taking Leelah to therapy and seeing how depressed she was they would think, "Hey, this is make our child happy, we should listen to what she has to say." Leelah never spoke to her mother about being transgendered after coming out for the first time. She hated her parents for what they did to her. Or they probably went "You are just being childish, stop that." Not defending these assholes, but I think this suicide thing is retarded, If I was her, I would just deal with it until I'm 18, move out, disown my family and do whatever the fuck I wish with my gender. I think the parents are just being overdemonized, that's all. Sure what they did was stupid but like the religious nuts they are, they didn't hire a real therapist or thought transgender people were the spawn of Satan, hell the kid probably could be a selfish prick desperate for attention.

The thing is that they cut her off from friends and took away her circle of friends and support. She had no one to talk to, no one to help her. She saw no future for herself because her parents did everything to limit leelahs contact with anyone. She had no way out of that situation.

I've been debating posting this because I know it's going to get backlash but whatever.

I know many of you are passionate about your beliefs and all but the vilifying of people who disagree with the popular opinion on moral issues is getting very aggravating on here. Much like how the Ferguson thread was constantly getting bumped with news stories along with little footnotes to paint anyone who disagreed with the popular opinion as brainwashed bigots that support a ruthless cop. As someone who did post in that thread with an unpopular opinion, I didn't quite appreciate that because it's not anywhere close to true.

Transsexuality is a relatively new and misunderstood issue by today's standards, especially in this particular case that involves a minor. Not everyone is going to agree with it nor completely understand it. That doesn't make them an asshole nor does it even mean they're necessarily wrong. It doesn't mean they need to be educated or shoved links in their face to shame them on their opinion. There's nothing wrong with taking pride and standing up for what you believe in. But to dramatize the issue further by instantly labeling anyone disagrees with it is not helping matters at all.
